Help Bring Gary and Family Home!

On September 6, 2025, Gary Gilgan embarked on a long-anticipated trip to Mexico with his wife, Norma, step-daughter, Laura, and other family members. He thoroughly enjoyed three days in Mexico, appreciating the weather, cuisine, and scenic views.

However, on the evening of September 9th, after spending quality time with family, Gary experienced a serious accident. While preparing for bed, he slipped and suffered a broken right femur and fractured right hip. This unforeseen incident necessitated an unplanned journey for medical care. On September 13th, Gary underwent surgery to repair the injuries. We are grateful for the professionalism and expertise demonstrated by the attending surgeon and medical staff.

It was subsequently determined that Gary’s medical insurance does not cover international air ambulance services, which are required for his safe return home. Additionally, the policy does not permit direct billing from Mexico, compelling the family to pay for all medical expenses out-of-pocket.

For Gary’s health and the well-being of his family members with him in Mexico —currently including his wife, son, step-daughter, and step-son—it is imperative he returns home as soon as possible. With the severity of his injuries and his dementia, Gary has a long road of recovery ahead, including acute rehab. As a result, the family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to secure funding for a medical air ambulance flight to the United States. This step is critical due to insurance limitations and the need to ensure comprehensive care.

The cost of the medical flight is currently $48,400.00. Daily hospital costs—paid directly and in advance—have reached $50,000.00 thus far (with the hope these may ultimately be reimbursed by insurance, though this is not guaranteed) and continue to accumulate at approximately $4,000.00 per day. Additional accommodation expenses for family members who are required by the hospital to stay with Gary around the clock total $2,000.00, resulting in an estimated current financial need of $102,000.00.
