Zory nos necesita

Mi mamá ha sido una guerrera durante 9 años, pero ahora necesita nuestra ayuda más que nunca.

Mi nombre es Michelle, y les escribo desde lo más profundo de mi corazón para contarles la historia de mi mamá, quien ha estado luchando con cáncer de pulmón estadio IV desde el año 2016. A lo largo de estos años, el cáncer ha regresado tres veces, pero esta última ha sido la más dura.

La medicina que recibía (Opdivo) dejó de hacer efecto, y el cáncer cambió su composición, volviéndose más agresivo. A esto se suman otras condiciones crónicas que complican aún más su estado: mi mamá también padece EPOC (enfisema pulmonar), una enfermedad respiratoria severa, y deficiencia cardiovascular.

Su sistema inmune está muy debilitado, lo que le ha provocado infecciones respiratorias, neumonía, desnutrición severa, y hasta un episodio de herpes zóster (culebrilla). Hace poco su estado fue tan crítico que sus pulmones colapsaron sumado con su desnutrición sus signos vitales desaparecieron por segundos. Aún así, luchó y logró salir adelante, como la guerrera que siempre ha sido.

Hoy, los médicos han decidido suspender todos los tratamientos activos porque su cuerpo no está fuerte para resistirlos, está desnutrida y deshidratada. La única opción viable es colocarle un “PEG tube” (una sonda directa al estómago) para alimentarla y tratar de recuperar su peso y energía.

Como muchas personas saben, el sistema de salud en Estados Unidos es costoso, y aunque mi mamá tiene seguro, hay muchos gastos que no están cubiertos: hospitalizaciones prolongadas, exámenes, medicamentos, equipo especial, alimentación por sonda y cuidados diarios.

Yo, como su hija, he tenido que dejar de trabajar para estar a su lado tiempo completo. Mi esposo Jordi ha asumido toda la carga económica como puede, pero ya no nos es posible cubrir todo lo que viene.

Es por eso que hoy recurro a ustedes.

My mom has been a warrior for 9 years, but now she needs our help more than ever.

My name is Michelle, and I’m writing from the deepest part of my heart to share my mom’s story. She has been battling stage IV lung cancer since 2016. Over the years, the cancer has returned three times — but this last time has been the hardest.

The treatment she was receiving (Opdivo) stopped working, and the cancer changed its composition, becoming even more aggressive. On top of that, my mom suffers from other chronic conditions that make everything even more complicated: she has COPD (emphysema), a severe respiratory illness, and cardiovascular deficiency.

Her immune system is now extremely weak, which has led to repeated respiratory infections, pneumonia, severe malnutrition, and even a shingles outbreak (herpes zoster). Not long ago, her condition became so critical that her lungs collapsed and she lost her vital signs for several minutes. And still, she fought — and came back — just like the warrior she has always been.

Now, doctors have had to stop all active treatments because her body is too fragile to handle them. The only viable option at this point is to place a PEG tube (a feeding tube directly into her stomach) to help her regain strength and weight.

As many of you know, the healthcare system in the United States is incredibly expensive. Even though my mom has insurance, many costs are not covered — long hospital stays, tests, medications, medical equipment, tube feeding, and specialized daily care.

As her daughter, I’ve had to stop working to care for her full-time. My husband is doing his best to support us financially, but it’s simply no longer enough.

That’s why I’m reaching out to you today.

With humility and hope, we kindly ask that if you are in a position to help, you consider contributing, no matter how small, to help us give my mom the quality of life she deserves in this incredibly difficult moment.
