For those of you who have ever met my Zooey, you know she's an anxious little critter. She can be yappy and overdramatic.
But you might not know that she's wonderfully curious, affectionate, empathetic. She has comforted me when I've been at my very lowest - especially over the past two years. I love my Zooey more than almost anything in my life.
Many small dog breeds, including chihuahua mixes, are predisposed to certain health problems. I knew this when I adopted her as a baby puppy 8 years ago. Over the last year, her periodontal health has started to suffer. After a consultation with the vet, it turns out she's going to need most or all of her teeth extracted and serious work done. In addition to causing her pain, infections in her gums are in danger of spreading to other parts of her body, causing organ failure, heart failure, and/or brain damage. This surgery isn't optional for my girl.
I don't talk about this stuff to many people, and I've never had to ask folks outside my family for something personal like this. But I have to put my embarrassment aside this time. I can't be too proud to admit when I'm in trouble and that I need help.
The past couple of years have been really tough for me, in several facets of my life, but including financially. Personal crisis after personal crisis have wiped out my savings. My tax status changed halfway through last year, causing me to be slapped with a huge tax bill. I'm sure to many of you who I see and work with everyday, you would never guess I was facing these challenges, because I'm not often vulnerable about this sort of thing.
But the pet insurance I've been enrolled in for over two years has refused to cover a single penny of this operation.
I simply don't have enough money to save my baby Zooey.
This really sucks, and part of me feels ashamed to ask for help. But I'm asking anyway.
