Zonda's Children's Forest

Hands of the Future, Inc is a non-profit whose mission is to connect children to nature. One of our long time dreams has been to find a woods to create a children's forest. It is a natural site that has been embelished upon with children's needs in mind and to encourage outdoor play and adventures. It is also a site for nature education programs. Children's forests have been around since 1993 in states all across the country and this would be Indiana's first one.
We found such a place in West Lafayette and have signed a purchase agreement to buy 18.8 acres of woods on Soldiers Home Road. We will be turning these woods into a nature-rich site for children, their families and those who are young at heart. We plan to have a barn, a greenhouse, both for classes, a caretaker's cottage and eventually a nature center geared towards children.
There will be six major areas for the children:
Incredible Edibles - A children's garden for the children to learn how to grow their own food. The greenhouse would be within this garden with a head house equiped with a kitchen. This would allow classes on not only growing food, but what to do with it afterwards.
Wee Folks Woods - This area will be embellished to make safe adventures for younger children.
Butterflies, Birds and Beyond - This area will be around the nature center and be designed to attract these animals closer to the nature center to be more easily viewed and enjoyed.
Amazing Sunflower Forest - This area will be a maze created with mostly sunflowers and include hiding spots. The older children on our youth counsel will be responsible for designing this and it will be different each year.
Owl Alley - this area will be between the more developed areas up front and the more wild areas in the back. It will be a labyrinth style walk with meditation spots and a focus on owls. Yes, we actually have a great horned owl in the area!
The Enchanted Forest - This will be the majority of the mature woods on the west end, designed to allow older children to have adventures. We hope for a few tree houses with bridges to connect them plus lots more fun stuff.
We are looking for people to become co-founders by donating $100 or more towards the purchase price of $235,000. This will include the closing costs. We have six months to raise the funds. We will be making founder plaques to honor our donors once the barn goes in. This is phase one. Once the land is purchased, we will begin with site improvements (phase two).
We are passionate about reaching the children in our community and introducing them to their world. Please check out our website: www.hands-future.org
We acknowledge all donations on our sponsor tab of our webpage. These are our levels:
Seed Sowers $1 - $25
Branching Dogwoods $26 - $100
