Help Zola get new Knees and Hips

Donation protected
Zola started life just as any other puppy would.  She was brought home by two loving puppy parents and shown all kinds of love and attention from family and friends. She met other furry friends from the neighborhood and loved to run around and play with them at the park.  She spent time at obedience class and learned to sit, stay, down, and everything else. Living in Colorado, Zola loves the mountains and the snow. Hiking with Mom and Dad is her favorite and she would do it every day if she could.

Unfortunately when she was around 8 months old, we started to notice that Zola was no longer acting her age.  She would only run for a few minutes with the other dogs at the park before she had to lay down and take a break.  She was no longer able to jump at all. She started to have an extremely difficult time getting up from laying down and she became slower and slower at going up stairs.  At 9 months old, we took her into the vet to try and get down to the bottom of what was wrong.

Our poor Zola has hip dysplasia and a torn cranial cruciate ligament in each knee. We do not know what caused the torn ligaments, but can suspect that some damage had been done by the way she is forced to walk with her hips not seated in their sockets. Because of the way she was born, Zola’s hip sockets are not deep enough to hold the end of the femur in the correct position.  We were devastated upon hearing this news and our heart breaks for our Zola each and every day as she just wants to run and play with her friends, but simply cannot. We can no longer take her for hikes with us and most of the time we are forced to carry all 70 pounds of her up the steps to our 2nd floor apartment (soon to be a 1st floor because of this).

We were told by the veterinarian that it is critical that Zola’s left knee is repaired within the next two months or she will develop bad arthritis that will cause her to be permanently lame in that leg within the next few years.

We are asking for any financial help we can get from friends, family, and fellow dog lovers. We desperately want to give Zola a life worth living, but we simply cannot afford the costs of giving her that opportunity. We were prepared for the financial requirements of the typical puppy, but we were far from ready to have to cover two knee repairs and two total hip replacements.

Right now, she is on four pills per day just to manage her pain.

If anything else, please let this be an encouragement to purchase health insurance for your pet. Had we known of these risks ahead of time or felt that it could happen to our puppy, we would have purchased insurance and hopefully had the majority of these costs covered.

In order to get Zola back to enjoying a pain-free puppyhood, we are looking at the following costs:

Left Knee CBLO - $5000

Left Hip Replacement - $5000

Right Hip Replacement - $5000

Please consider donating if you can help us. We need to get Zola’s left knee repaired soon or she may not be able to walk on it and we don’t want to have to make any tough decisions with a 2 or 3 year old dog. If we can’t afford to fix her knee, we feel the best option would be to give her to someone who can afford all 3 procedures and give her a full and pain-free life. Elizabeth and I would be devastated and it would be our very last resort, but we could not watch our Zola lose the ability to walk and would much rather have her be able to live a pain free life with someone who can afford to get her the surgeries she would need.
