Zoey turned two years old July 23, 2019.
August 5, 2019 she was playing on the couch at home, when she slipped on a blanket and fell off. What we all thought was a scary, but not life threatening trip to the ER for a concussion, turned into an unbelievable nightmare.
The ER couldn’t find any signs of a concussion after a CT scan of her head, but it was obvious Zoey was not her cheerful bubbly self. The ER doctors did an ultrasound on her stomach and found a large mass on her left kidney.
Zoey was taken by ambulance to Dorenbecher’s ER, an hour away.
After multiple CT scans and consultations with doctors and surgeons, Zoey was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor on her left kidney. When she slipped off the couch, the tumor ruptured. Due to the rupture, she has been bleeding internally for two days. The doctors decided not to perform a biopsy on the tumor for fear of the cancer spreading rapidly, as the cancerous tumor is encased in a sac like membrane after rupturing. The doctors are unable to surgically remove the cancer at this time because of complications from internal bleeding and the tumor is too large, covering her kidney.
Zoey will have 20 – 25 weeks of chemotherapy, beginning as soon as possible. She is in surgery to have the chemo port implanted in her chest today, August 8th, with chemotherapy expected to start today as well. After 4 -6 weeks of chemotherapy, the doctors are hoping the tumor has shrunk enough to be surgically removed. After that, chemo will resume.
