Zoe was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on May 12, 2016. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease and cannot be prevented or cured. Your pancreas produces little to no insulin. Therefore, you have to do daily injections and finger pricks to monitor your levels. One thing that comes with Type 1 is low and high blood sugars. Basically because you are playing the part of an organ that responds to many different things in your body. Normal people that have a working pancreas, it reacts to your body and puts out then insulin you need. Many type 1’s can become hypo unaware. This means they don’t feel their blood sugar getting low. This is extremely dangerous because that can cause seizures, loss of consciousness, and even death. Zoe use to feel her lows at around 70. Lately she hasn’t been feeling them until about 50. She also does not wake up at night when she is low. It is extremely hard to get her to drink or eat something to get it back up to a normal range. She has dreamed of getting a diabetic alert dog since she got diagnosed, but with the costs, it just wasn’t an option. We have had so many people offer to help out, but it’s hard to find a good place to put the funds. That’s where this comes in. Here’s a bit of information about the costs.
The cost of a diabetic alert dog is around $18,000. You put down a deposit of around $5,000 to start the process. This seems like a lot, but if you factor in a year if someone’s life, that isn’t a lot of money. Also, you have to factor in food, vet bills, registration, and many more things that we don’t even think about. The business that we plan on going with is Heartland Diabetic Alert Dogs. I talked with the guy today and he seems so genuine and so extremely nice. His daughter is Type 1 Diabetic as well. They live in Oklahoma.

These dogs are amazing and are better than any technology with detecting blood sugar spikes and drops. This is her dream and this would give her somewhat of a partner in this journey of hers. The training process takes a good year and we can’t even start until we get a down payment. We have so many people reaching out and we will be posting all fundraisers through here. We appreciate you all so much and look forward to this journey. We also welcome any ideas anyone has.
