5/14/2024 Update:
Zoe's chest x-rays from last Friday did not reveal evidence of cancer spread to her lungs! We are going to continue with the chemo treatments as planned. We've also resumed anti-inflammatory treatment for arthritis in her legs, which seem to be helping with any discomfort when she walks. Overall, she's taking the treatment very well. Zoe's spirits are up, she's more and more playful all the time, and handling longer walks. There's still more to go on our journey, but as of now the path has leveled out.
Update: April 1, 2024
Zoe continues to make amazing progress. She's all but mastered walking on three legs. Stairs are still a struggle, but she's determined not to let them stop her. She's playing, running, and our walks are getting longer before she get's tired. Though on two occasions, we've had to carry her back to the car as she was just too tired to walk. She's also learned that floors without carpet in the home are slick and scarry. She now waits for help getting across. We've purchased rugs and carpets to cover the wood and laminate floors throughout the house. Her last chemo treatment was postponed due to low white blood cell count. We expect our next attempt this week to go smoothly.
Update: March 13, 2024
Zoe's personality is slowly returning. She picked up a toy that she loves and wanted to play, first time she's shown interest in playing since all this started on Feb 17.
Zoe underwent her first of six chemo treatments last Friday, March 8th, which she handled well with no signs of any side effects. We will do additional testing this week and next to ensure there are no negative reactions in her blood and to see how her body is handing the treatment.
Today, she had her first of two injections of a trail vaccine showing promise in slowing or stopping the cancer from spreading. We'll see how she responds to that in the coming hours and days.
To date, treatment has cost $14,300. The generous gifts from this site has helped tremendously. There are more treatments to go over the next several weeks.
Update: March 7, 2024
Had a great conversation with the oncologist yesterday. We will begin the first of 6 chemo treatments tomorrow, March 8. We are also hopeful about getting Zoe into a trial vaccine program that has been showing good results. Thank you all for your continued love and support.
March 1, 2024 Update:
Zoe's pathology report came back positive for osteosarcoma, an aggressive cancer in the bone. We have a vet appointment on 3/4/2024 to xray the remaining rear leg to ensure it's strong enough to carry her weight.
-------------
Those who know me will know how hard this is for me to ask for help. However, this request isn't to just help me, but to help my best friend, companion, and important member of my family for more than 10 years, Zoe, a 12 year old rescue German Shepard/Huskey.
On February 17, 2024, Zoe was rushed to the emergency room where x-rays showed a broken left rear femur. The break was caused by a weakening of the bone, likely due to advanced and aggressive cancer. (We are still waiting on the pathology report.)
After consulting veterinarians, surgeons, and oncology specialists, we decided the urgent course of action was to amputate the limb to reduce immediate pain. The surgery was successful and Zoe is home recovering. But this is only the beginning. Once we get the oncology report, we will begin treatment.
With the ER and surgery costs amounting to over $12,000, medical bills will easily reach $20,000 with chemo treatment and additional vet visits and medications. We are asking for help to cover these unexpected medical bills.
Any money raised over the actual cost of treatment will be donated to K9 cancer research or to emergency veterinary hospitals for those who cannot pay themselves.
My family thanks your for your generosity to help extend the comfort and life of this amazing friend, companion, family member.
