Zoe's Spinal Surgery
Hello,
My Name is Zoe & unfortunately I require back / spinal surgery!! :( Please read my story below...
I'm a 6 year old (7 in March :P) miniature dachshund from Melbourne, Australia. A lot of people know of me because I can be quite bossy, sassy & have a big attitude which my parents always tell me off for, but once you get to know me & bribe me with quite a few treats I'm actually a really lovely dog.
I've been back & forth to the vets over the past couple of weeks as I have had some back pain, earlier in the week I started loosing strength in my back legs so mum had to take me to the specialist. Wednesday morning I was diagnosed with IVDD. For those that don't know IVDD explained simply is Intervertebral disc disease, a common condition in the spine that causes back pain, partial loss of function in the limbs, and can quickly progress to paralysis. This is really common in sausages like me because we are so long, but I am lucky because I am in the early stages, which means I still have feeling in my legs, I still have pain, I am just very wobbly & I fall over a lot, but it is still very serious & my surgeon said that I need to have surgery as quickly as possible to have best results, otherwise the surgery risks become higher and I risk developing paralysis in the meantime (which can come on as quickly as a few hours, very unpredictable!!) which is really scary. :(
My mum is really upset & keeps crying saying she doesn't know what she would do without me and I believe her, it is pretty obvious that her world revolves around me, she treats me even better than she treats dad!! Everyone says so :P
My vet bills over the past 2 weeks have already cost over $1000. I have pet insurance & they have agreed to cover 75% of my surgery costs (Surgery is approx $7000), my mum will still have to pay the difference. After my surgery there will be additional out of pockets cost as I will be required to have physio & hydro rehab sessions to learn to walk properly again & hopefully get the full use of my legs back, which I am really not happy about because I hate the pool & getting wet, but mum & dad said that I don't have a choice. My mum is in between full time work at the moment & the surgeon lady told her yesterday that she will need to be off for up to 4 - 6 weeks after my surgery too as I will need around the clock care, she said I might not be able to move much & my mum might have to help me with eating & carrying me out to the toilet.
I am hoping that when people read my story they will be generous enough to donate some money towards helping me & I promise that if people are super generous and we end up going over our goal my Mum will donate the excess money to IVDD Australia to help other dogs like me. Mum loves fundraising & donating money to causes helping animals so I know that she won't hesitate.
Please help me by sharing my story on your social media pages so we can reach lots of other people & if you can spare to give me even as little as $5 I would be so grateful!!
Lots of Love,
Zoe (woof) x
