Half Marathon for Equal Justice Initiative
Tax deductible
I ask you to consider becoming a sponsor for my half marathon on June 19th, helping me raise money to benefit the Equal Justice Initiative (https://eji.org/). Any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this important cause.
Since the cancellation of the spring term, I have spent my time in quarantine training for a half marathon. I had initially hoped to run a half marathon in an organized race, but seeing as that can't happen, I decided that I would run the race by myself the day before my 18th birthday. I knew I wanted to use the race as a way to raise money, but struggled to decide on an organization. After reflecting on the events of the past week, it became clear where the money should go. I will never be able to fully understand the history of racial injustice, but I am working to educate myself and I ask that you all do too.
I ask you to read through the Equal Justice Initiative's website. The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is a nonprofit, human rights organization committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting the basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. As you see in the video I linked above, the Equal Justice Initiative is committed to educating the public on, and trying to correct, the systematic racism in our country that dates back to its founding. I understand that this donation and run is not enough. I do not plan to stop learning and researching, but to do so, sites and organizations like the Equal Justice Initiative need to exist. I run this half marathon in honor of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and all of the lives taken as a result of the systematic racism that exists in this country. Thank you for taking the time to hear about my fundraiser. I encourage you to keep asking and learning. No step is too small.
