I am starting this fund for my cousin Peter's daughter, Zoe. She was born in December 2019 with fibular hemimelia, a very rate birth defect occurring in only 1 in 40,000 birth.
In Zoe's case, this condition means that her right leg is shorter than the left and one of her toes and the bones related to that toe are absent in her right foot. This results an unstable ankle, her ankle turns inward, it cannot support her as a normal ankle would support her when she stands up to walk.
After several consultations with doctors, Peter was told that Zoe has the option to have her ankle reconstructed with a procedure called super ankle procedure. After this initial, very important procedure, her ankle would move as a normal healthy ankle would move, she could even run. Later on, she needs to have at least one leg lengthening in her life at age 13 or 14 when the difference between her legs will be about 2 inches.
I started this fund to help Zoe to go to Baltimore, Maryland to have the super ankle procedure done. The doctor in Baltimore said that her ankle will be close to 100%, that's why my cousin decided to go there. The procedure will be scheduled for the Fall of 2021, after Zoe turns 18 months old, but before she turns 2 years old.
I'd like to add that my cousin and Zoe live in Hungary where the doctors could do a procedure but only to create an ankle with which she could not move her foot. Zoe wouldn't be able to bend her ankle and use it as if it was normal. With the super ankle procedure, she would be able to use her ankle as if it was normal. That's why I decided to help my cousin to come to Baltimore with Zoe to give her little daughter a better chance in life. Her doctor in Baltimore is very helpful and positive about the surgery outcome.
Since they are from abroad, they don't have insurance in the US and the Hungarian insurance will not cover the procedure. Per the Baltimore hospital the procedure Zoe needs to have after she turns 18 months will cost $65000.
Please help raising money to give Zoe a better prospect in life! Every donation will be highly appreciated!
