Andrea is fighting breast cancer. She was diagnosed this past summer, just before her daughter's wedding. Her son is still living at home. She has raised her two children for the past 7 years as a single parent, and has worked with children who have special needs as an Educational Assistant with School District 79 for 20 years. She had surgery in July, and has started treatments which involves 15 months of chemotherapy (started in Sept.2015) - it is about a 6 hour process every 3 weeks. She will also undergo radiation therapy for 2 months, which will require driving back and forth to Victoria every day. Since she is unable to work during her treatment, and with a limited disability income (paying about half of her regular income) it will be a struggle to keep up with expenses such as rent, food, bills, fuel and extra medical expenses.Some expensive medications, such as anti-nausea meds are not covered by medical insurance. After December 16th there will be another waiting period between short term and long term disability, putting more strain on her family financially at Christmas. So the way her disability works out (and her being a ten month employee) there will be about 4 months altogether with no employment or disability income at all.
