Help a Honduran Woman Go to Harvard

Dear friends,

I am Nadia Seren, a first-generation college graduate and one of the first Honduran women to be admitted in the Public Administration Program at Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

As a member of a working-class family in La Lima Honduras, having the opportunity to further my education in one of the most prestigious institutions in the world is a dream come true. However, I am unable to afford the entire cost of attendance due to my limited economic resources, which were badly hit after my hometown was affected by back-to-back hurricanes in 2020. (Total Cost of Attendance: $105,073/ https://www.hks.harvard.edu/admissions-aid/funding-your-education/funding-your-masters-education/tuition-fees) Between personal savings, an education loan and a scholarship I have been able to raise $85,000 but I am still $15,000 short.

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America and the world, where violence against women is rampant, forcing them to flee by the thousands. I want to help change this panorama of poverty, violence and hopelessness. This is why I decided to apply to Harvard University, so I can get the best education to help improve the quality of life of my fellow Hondurans. 

I desire to serve my country just as I served my community when in the midst of the destruction left by the floods of the hurricanes, I led an effort to clean my town and regain a safe environment for all neighbors; an objective that was achieved with the help of the entire community.

Given the circumstances, I am asking for your help knowing that the power of community can also make this dream come true; and in this way, inspire other Honduran women to dream big, serve others and transform our country.

Soy Nadia Seren, universitaria de primera generación y una de las primeras mujeres hondureñas en ser admitida en el Programa de Administración Pública de la Escuela de Gobierno Kennedy en la Universidad de Harvard.

Como miembro de una familia de clase trabajadora de La Lima Honduras, el tener la oportunidad de continuar mi educación en una de las instituciones más prestigiosas del mundo es un sueño hecho realidad. Sin embargo, no me es posible pagar el costo total del programa debido a mis recursos económicos limitados, que se vieron gravemente afectados después de que mi ciudad natal sufrió el impacto de huracanes consecutivos en 2020. Con ahorros personales, un préstamo educativo y una beca he podido recaudar 85,000 dólares; sin embargo, todavía me falta el poder recaudar 15,000 dólares.  

Honduras es uno de los países más pobres de América Latina y el mundo, donde la violencia contra las mujeres es creciente, lo que las obliga a huir del país. Quiero ayudar a cambiar este panorama de pobreza, violencia y desesperanza. Por eso decidí postularme a la Universidad de Harvard, para poder obtener la mejor educación que me ayude a mejorar la calidad de vida de los hondureños.

Deseo servir a mi país como serví a mi comunidad cuando en medio de la destrucción que dejaron las inundaciones de los huracanes, lideré un esfuerzo para limpiar la misma y recuperar un ambiente seguro para todos los vecinos; un objetivo que se logró con la ayuda de toda la comunidad.

Dadas las circunstancias, les pido su ayuda sabiendo que el poder de la comunidad también puede hacer realidad este sueño; y de esta manera, inspirar a otras mujeres hondureñas a soñar en grande, servir a otros y transformar nuestro país.

At the end of the cleaning effort more than 6,188 cubic meters of debris were removed from the community regaining a healthy environment /// Al final de actividad de limpieza más de 6,188 metros cúbicos de escombros fueron removidos de la comunidad recuperando un ambiente saludable.
