Hi, my name is Bandit Borsch. I am a 9 year old male Siberian Husky. I live in Chicago in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood, along with my sister Chaos, and my human parents. Some years back, Chaos and I found ourselves at the Free Spirit Husky Rescue hoping to find a furever home. We were treated wonderfully there, as they have been caring for Huskies for over 25 years, but we longed for a home to call our own. Because we were a bonded pair, we could not be separated. In part because of this, and in part because of our age, we were passed over for adoption many times. Fortunately we were finally adopted by a couple in Mount Greenwood who were thrilled to have us. Life was great with daily trips to the dog park, walks, and lounging around. Unfortunately in December I was diagnosed with diabetes. This required intensive medical care, including insulin management. In March I developed a severe case of pancreatitis which required a 3 day stay in the critical care unit at VCA Arboretumview Veteranarian Hospital. This illness caused me to lose 14 pounds. Upon being released from the hospital, a librelink glucose monitor was placed on my back to monitor my sugar, and it must be changed every 2 weeks. I was placed on a special diet, and in the next few months I regained my weight and strength, and was doing pretty well. In the beginning of May, as is common with diabetic dogs, I developed a case of diabetic cataracts. I became completely blind. I had to be monitored around the clock. On June 17th I had cataracts surgery, and so far so good. I am now able to see again. I am still some weeks away from returning to normal activity. Unfortunately for my parents, the cost of this medical care has been staggering. The cost of my glucose monitor, installation at the vet, and insulin, is over $250 a month. My hospitalization in the critical care in March cost nearly $7000. My ophthalmologist bill, for all testing and surgery, is already over $7500, with more aftercare needed. This does not include regular veterinary care, my internal medicine specialist, or further ophthalmology care. Hopefully the worst is behind me, but no matter what, i will need insulin and a monitor for the rest of my life. Even with all that has happened, I consider myself a very lucky dog. My parents love me and my sister very much and would do anything for us. Any help you can give our family would be greatly appreciated. Follow me on social media.
