Help Tyrese stay at NYU

A day in the life of Tyrese

Tyrese's Biography
Tyrese, 22, is a proud Brooklyn native and graduated with honors from Henry Viscardi School in Long Island. His exceptional academic record has allowed him to continue his studies at New York University on full scholarship, with the intention of becoming an advocacy lawyer that concentrates on elevating the rights of the disabled community. Born prematurely at 23 weeks, he suffers from triplegic Cerebral Palsy which affects his left side, both legs, and requires him to use a wheelchair. In addition to this, he has two learning disabilities, dyscalculia and dysgraphia. Despite this, he maintains a 3.3GPA average and for the past 10 years has been a prominent public speaker. Giving keynote addresses for many children's organizations such as the Starlight Children's Foundation, S.K.I.P. of New York, New Alternatives for Children, and IncludeNYC.  Most recently he was asked to speak on the television network CBS as an ambassador for Encourage Kids Foundation and before that at the Brooklyn Developmental Disability Council, at the legislative brunch. Additionally, Tyrese has addressed the Black Law Student Association at Harvard Law School and spoke at Columbia University Disability Caucus.  In the summer of 2017, Tyrese was one of twenty high school students chosen out of 500 applicants to intern at the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office. Tyrese will be spending his next year focusing on his curriculum as an English Major and also as a new part of the prestigious NYU Slam Poetry Team.  He is an avid writer, currently working on his first book “Common Ground'' about a newly disabled young man who overcomes his infirmity to become an assistant basketball coach. He aspires to have his book published by Senior year of ‘22.

The Reasoning for Funds:
Tyrese is in a precarious situation where he can’t live at home, so he must stay this summer in the NYU dorms. The building's elevators at his home have a history of constantly breaking down, leaving Tyrese to either have to relocate or somehow be lifted up the stairs to the 5th floor. However, both of these solutions are not possible at this time. In addition to this, his mother suffers from various health complications that leave her incapableof caring for Tyrese. This funding will not only help Tyrese but will keep employed the 5 staff members (Home health aides and Community habilitation workers) that he needs for around-the-clock-the-assistance. The cost to live at NYU dorms for the summer is $6,300, plus $1,836 for the 12-week meal plan. Tyrese, on his own, has been able to find some support through a Self-direction program with the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities(OPWDD) who will offer some assistance beginning July. But, due to the global pandemic their money could be delayed.  If there are grants, foundations, or donors available, he will apply. Tyrese would be very grateful as at the moment to receive any funds, as he has no other options in New York City.

GoFundMe does take a portion of the donations, so any additional support is appreciated.
