Launch Zimbabwe’s First Biodiversity Learning Centre

This campaign addresses the urgent need to protect Chimanimani following the devastation of Cyclone Idai in March 2019.

We are establishing a Biodiversity Learning Centre to educate the district's youth. They will learn the critical importance of Chimanimani's mountains and unique biodiversity—the essential source of water security for Southern Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Why this matters
The magnificent Chimanimani Mountain Range is one of Africa’s natural wonders. Its soaring quartzite peaks host breathtaking biodiversity, including more than eighty species found nowhere else on Earth. Recognising its global importance, UNESCO designated Chimanimani a Biosphere Reserve in 2023.

Yet for local families, these mountain aren’t just beautiful - they are essential for survival. When Cyclone Idai struck in 2019, devastating floods and landslides tore through the region, destroying homes and lives. The disaster revealed how vulnerable communities become when the mountain ecosystem is damaged and loses its ability to protect them.

The need to redress this balance is clear. This is how you can help.

We have managed to buy a near derelict building in the heart of Chimanimani village. Key to this was a substantial grant from the well renowned Beit Trust and years of fundraising by ourselves: Peza Trust.

Local donations of timber and paint and labour have started the renovation but we need so much more: running water, desks, chairs, blackboards, white boards, an internet connection, educational resources, computers, teachers, transport, pencils, pens … the list is long.

So we need your help please. We know how to stretch a dollar as far as it can go - we are Zimbabweans after all. Here is what your donation could buy …

  • £10 provides a day of education including materials and lunch
  • £20 buys three ceiling boards
  • £50 will get us five to eight chairs
  • £100 will fix half of the guttering
  • the list is long

Our Credentials
Our existing programs work: Since 2010, the Peza Trust has supported Chimanimani youngsters, many who have gone on to become leaders in hospitality, local business, and national sports (particularly golf). Your investment doesn't just protect the environment; it builds successful careers, aligning with the new law that mandates community participation.

Our Team: The project is managed by the Peza Trust team (Jane High, Alexander Muyambo, Chris Wilson and Jose Tekesa), who have successfully run the local Matsetso Stars youth program since 2010. We have deep local roots and proven commitment.
