Dying Children Matter
The mention of paediatric palliative care brings many mixed emotions. To many it is fear, sadness, hopelessness and despair. Yet such is not the essence of paediatric palliative care (PPC). PPC is holistic care putting children and their families in the forefront. PPC for children and young people with life-limiting conditions is an active and total approach to care, embracing physical, emotional, social and spiritual elements. It focuses on enhancement of quality of life for the child and support for the family and includes the management of distressing symptoms, provision of respite, and care through death and bereavement.'
Over the last few years there have been many challenges in Zimbabwe’s healthcare. Many are suffering and dying undignified deaths due to limited or lack of resources and services to help.
A recent study identified over 200 000 children in Zimbabwe need palliative care, with less than 1% actually receiving such care. It is with this in mind that we felt the need to establish an organization to do something about this. We are seeking funds to finance the establishment of the organization. Our objectives are:
1. To work collaboratively with other local health providers to advance palliative care and support the unique palliative needs of children, young people and their families.
2. To identify opportunities for improvement of palliative care delivery in Zimbabwe.
3. To train and mentor health professionals
4. To support families and carers through health related activities.
Any donation is welcome and appreciated – “Unless someone like you care an awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Seuss
We are passionate Zimbabwean Australians made up of doctors and nurses working in palliative care or with an interest in paediatric palliative care.
Our work will enable us to travel to Zimbabwe to run workshops, work with and support the paediatric palliative care work of Island Hospice Healthcare and Kidzcan.
How the funds will be spent .
(a) To provide palliative care education and information to health care professionals, families and carers.
(b) To fund workshops and training programs and networking opportunities
(c) To fund health forums for members of the Association and promote health related social functions.
The proceeds will be withdrawn to pay for the legal costs to setup in Australia. We cannot do the work we intend to do if we do not have a firm legal structure to protect the donors and recipients. Any excess funds will be donated to Island Hospice and Healthcare in Zimbabwe for the intended philanthropic work.
