Moms Accident
Sunday July 12th, 2015 started out as normal as one would expect. Our mom, Kathleen Pedrin was anxious for a fun day doing what she loved and hanging out with family and friends. In the early hours, she tinkered around her Anza, CA property and worked in her beloved garden. About 9:30 she left and headed out in her truck she calls “Black Beauty” to watch the motocross races at Cahuilla Creek. She had been looking forward to this event for a few weeks. Transworld Motocross was promoting a motocross event there. Her daughter Retta would be working at the event as a flagger and mom loved the vibe at motocross races. As a matter of fact she has four adult children who she has supported as riders and off road enthusiasts since 1975. Mom was introduced to motorcycles at a young age. He father and uncle rode in the hills of San Diego in the 60’s and 70’s. Mom learned how to ride in a City Heights canyon on her dad’s Hodaka.
All of her children rode growing up and into adulthood and passed the tradition onto her grandchildren. Mom has camped in the desert many times and has attended many off road races in the desert, Baja races and motocross tracks in her lifetime. She loved the track and vibe at Cahuilla Creek. It is close to her house and she would stop by to support her family and visit friends. But she really loved to watch the riders on the track, especially the kids. That is her favorite part, watching the kids ride, seeing how the sport has progressed and how much “air time” they are getting.
After checking out the event, visiting with some friends and her daughter, she decided to walk over to the big tabletop jump to see the expert’s race. At approx. 1:00 pm an unfortunate and “freak” life-changing event occurred. Mom was standing inside the flagger hut at the top of the hill next to the big tabletop jump. She was with her friend’s 10-year-old daughter. A flagger was sitting on top of the hut to get a birds eye view of the action. At that time a racer lost control of his motorcycle and struck the flagger hut, striking mom directly and destroying the hut.
All four involved received injuries, but the flagger, little girl and rider were able to avoid major injuries. Mom was not so lucky. She was hit directly in the chest, receiving major internal trauma. The paramedics on scene should be credited for saving her life with a swift decision to proceed with a “track side” needle-decompression procedure, placed into her right lung, allowing her to breathe. She was stabilized and transported via helicopter to Inland Valley hospital in Wildomar, CA. She has sustained multiple major injuries resulting from the “freak accident” including a collapsed right lung, partially collapsed left lung, lacerated liver, multiple broken ribs, cracked T2 vertebra, cracked lumbar vertebra, badly sprained ankle and multiple cuts, bruises and abrasions.
She has been placed in a medicated state and is on life support to continue to stabilize her condition. The Doctors predict she will be on life support for approx. 7-10 days or until she can sustain breathing on her own power. We have received positive news that she should recover from these injuries but she is in for a long fight and rehab to recover from the accident. It is unknown at this time how her long-term quality of life will be affected.
Our family is reaching out to anyone who can donate to help this 66 year old grandma win the battle of her life. We would especially like to ask the motorcycle community to step up and show your support for a true advocate of the sport and lifestyle.
Our family would also like to thank the Paramedics from Cal Fire, the crew of Mercy Air and the incredible staff at Inland Valley Emergency and ICU for saving our mom.
Any donations will be used towards her rehabilitation.
Thank you in advance for you generosity!
