Yesterday, on February 23, 2025, I was just leaving my weekend job when I received a phone call from my next door neighbor that changed our lives forever. He said “there are flames coming out of your son’s room, the fire department is on its way.” When I finally got in contact with my family, they were physically ok. I was on the phone with my mom who was with the FDNY, trying to locate my dog when I heard one of them tell her we tried, but he didn’t make it, get a bag for his body and the apartment is a total loss. Everything we had is gone, but the clothes on our backs and the 1 sweatsuit each we received from the Red Cross. I was told by the Red Cross and FDNY that nothing is salvageable and to just walk away from this basically thankful we made it out alive. Now we have to start our entire lives from scratch, and find a new place to live, although the Red Cross did provide us with a 2 night stay at a hotel, but we are on our own after 11am Feb 25.
