If two kidney transplants were not enough to endure, Dr. Susan Sullivan is now facing another challenge. Due to severe arthritis, her legs and arms are not strong enough to support her. She is in the hospital and doctors are considering possible double knee replacement and then shoulder replacement.
For those of you who don’t know, until 2005, Susan was a psychologist at the Navajo Reservation in Crown Point, New Mexico where worked with Navajo Indian children – preschool to 8th grade. She was forced to go on disability when her first kidney transplant began to fail and she had to resume dialysis.
Her income, needless to say, is very limited given her extensive needs and she is not eligible for Food Stamps or Medicaid. Susan’s Medicare benefits are extremely limited and exhausted for many services. In addition, there are things she desperately needs that are not covered by insurance. While Mark is doing everything physically possible to care for Susan, he can no longer provide the kind of round the clock, 24-7, care she requires.
Here are some of Susan’s needs.
* She is in need of respite care to supplement what
Mark is able to do.
* Her ten year old Honda requires repairs and is
essential to getting her to and from appointments
with doctors, picking up groceries etc. There is no
public transportation where she lives.
* There are also medical supplies such as
diapers.
* Rent is also a problem this month.
Those of us who know Susan want to add Internet access to this list so that she can communicate with family and friends.
