Rick's Road to Recovery

Meet the Stockler family. This wonderful family has been a part of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine for 9 years. During this time, Jenna and Ricardo (Rick) have been members of the Food Animal Section as veterinarians and teachers. They have dedicated their lives to the patients, client, and students while educating the next generation of veterinarians. Mariana (16), Gabby (6), and Olivia (2) are beautiful, energetic girls that would brighten anyone’s day. Rick was getting ready to begin a new chapter of his professional life by starting a new job with the state; however, last week, tragedy struck this precious family. While visiting Jenna’s parents in West Virginia, Rick suffered a severe stroke with arterial vascular dissection and a large clot extending from his neck to the brain. This stroke left him with major deficits including loss of function of his right side.

Through the efforts of the hospital team, Rick’s condition has stabilized, and he has made some important improvements, for which we are all thankful. He is able to sit up, speak (not without difficulty), and has been able to swallow and eat more liquids and foods. It is evident that the road to recovery will be long and difficult. We are all looking forward to seeing that infectious Rick Stockler smile again. Rick will need continued care for an extended period of time. There will be many unforeseen expenses along the way that will not be covered. In addition to the medical expenses, there will be many life expenses that the family will have trouble covering on Jenna’s income.

At this time Rick’s, prognosis for a full recovery is unknown; but we are optimistic. With every little positive development, we see progress to recovery.

This family has impacted so many people with their generosity and caring nature. They have both been a tremendous asset to Auburn University CVM students, clients, patients, and faculty and staff. They are dedicated members of the Auburn Family. Rick has worked tirelessly to provide an ambulatory service to our producers. Now they need our help. We need to surround them with care and assistance. Please give back to this amazing family.
