Save Brutus: Urgent Surgery Needed
Donation protected
6 months ago I woke up to this big boy (Brutus) paralyzed in his back legs. He had a fever of 106 and was fighting sepsis. After a week of constant turning, and cleaning messes and constant puppy pads he thankfully got his feeling back in his legs. A month of antibiotics and things were looking good.
Unfortunately they were not good, the infection came back, same process, this time different meds were given for two whole months with weekly ultrasounds.
Everything went great for a month or so, doctor thought the infection was knocked out but warned me that if it came back, he would need "exploratory surgery" to go in and find whatever is causing the infection along his spine.
As of this morning (6/24) its back. His fever is through the roof, he's having trouble walking, and were making an immediate trip to the vet for his exploratory surgery.
I hate asking but this has been so extremely expensive. I've lost a cat of 18 years and a dog of 12 years in the past 6 months. I can not lose this good boy so soon. He's only 4 years old.
Please, if you have anything to give, it would be greatly appreciated. If you can't help financially, I understand, just say a little prayer for my baby.
Update: 2PM 6/24. The vet does not want to do surgery immediately. He is going to put him back on the antibiotics for SIX MONTHS. After 2-3 weeks, Brutus will need a CT Scan (to determine the exact cause of the persistent re-infection) There are three options of what is causing this, none of which are great, but all of which can be cured.
1. Disco-Spondylitis. (what we have been treating) in extremely rare cases, may take up to 6 months of consistent antibiotics to clear entirely from his spine.
2. Foreign material (such as a stick or even blade of grass) got into him somehow and managed to embed itself along his spine causing the consistent reinfection along his spine.
3. Tumor. (which was not visible on X-ray or Ultrasounds)
The CT Scan is going to be $1,700 and Surgery will range from $1,000-$3,000 depending on the location, potential tumor complexity, and required aftercare.
