Wheelchair Accessible Van for Joe

Hello everyone! We are beyond thankful for the love and support everyone has shown Joe and our family the past nine months. Following Joe’s accident in November, we have traveled from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA for rehab and we are now very excited to welcome Joe back home to Ohio! With these transitions and the care Joe has received come hefty medical bills. The generosity of our supporters has helped pay for medical rehabilitation, an electric wheelchair that has increased Joe’s independence, an unbelievable amount of medical supplies required for Joe’s care and has eased the financial insecurity we have felt facing no income. We cannot express how truly grateful we are for the donations we have received. Now, however, we need help to get Joe a wheelchair accessible van.

There is a dire need for a wheelchair accessible vehicle so that Joe can be transported to his medical appointments without having to rely on an ambulance each time. In addition to facing scheduling conflicts and long wait times with community transport, we desire the freedom to leave the house and increase Joe’s quality of life. Simply going for a drive and checking out the township roads or going to get an ice cream would mean the world to Joe!

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for each and every donation, the thoughts and prayers, and for always Believing in Brothag!

Back Story:

On November 18, 2019 Joe Brothag fell from scaffolding and sustained a life changing spinal cord injury. He was life flighted to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA where he fought for his life in the ICU for two months. Against odds, Joe pulled through and became medically stable. From there, Joe was flown on a medical ambulance by Grace on Wings to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA. The facility is one of the only rehabilitation hospitals to offer specialty medical care and rehab for spinal cord injuries. After almost seven months of rehab, Joe was flown home to Ohio. Joe is so grateful to be home and his family and friends are overwhelmed with gratitude to have him home and in the care of those he loves. Despite how far Joe has come, he still has a long battle ahead of him. Joe is a C1 SCI and stroke survivor. With this level injury, Joe is dependent on a ventilator to breathe, a sip and puff wheelchair to move around and is paralyzed from the chin down.

Joe is a family man, an incredibly hard and driven worker, and a positive light in the lives of all those he encounters. Prior to his injury, Joe would do absolutely anything for anyone and boasted a huge heart of gold. The injury was life altering for him and his family. Despite the hardships he has faced and a truly devastating injury, Joe still radiates positivity! He continues to place others before himself and is so grateful for all of the love and support he has and continues to receive.
