The Words of Renee:
HAPPY 60th BIRTHDAY TO ME!
I certainly didn't think I'd be celebrating this birthday from a bed in a rehabilitation facility, but here I am. While some of you already know what's been going on, let me get the rest of you up to speed.
Two Sundays ago, I smelled something funky coming from my basement. I went downstairs and realized that a critter had ended its journey in an undetectable location so I decided I'd call Orkin in the morning to take care of the issue. As I was closing the door to the game room, I lost my footing from the stairs and BOOM down I went. I looked down to see my right foot flopping like a dead fish and quickly realized I had also broken my right arm. My iPhone was supposed to detect a fall, but it did not!
As I lay on the floor trying to figure out what I was going to do next, I pondered making a splint with the pool sticks, but I realized that was foolish so I texted my friend Lisa Cook and she dispatched help.
I was taken to the local hospital where they stabilized my foot and quickly realized I needed more attention than they could provide. I was transferred to Mission Hospital in Asheville where the orthopedic surgeon put me back together with rods and screws in my leg and ankle. He felt the shoulder could heal on its own and more will be determined on my follow up appointment on Tuesday.
I spent the next 5 days at Mission Hospital desperately trying to find a rehab facility that would accept me as a "self pay" as my insurance is, let's just say, shitty at best. With the help of friends I was able to secure a bed closer to home and was transferred to Silver Bluff Rehabilitation in Canton.
As I embark on this next chapter, I am in a much different position then I could ever have imagined. I am so grateful for my new mountain family and my old reliables in Florida, and am humbled by the love and support from all of you. I have NEVER felt this much love in my life.
Those of you who know me know I'll be back quicker than most, but my medical recovery is going to take quite some time, as well as a lot of funds.
I have attached a Go Fund Me link, and I humbly ask, if you are so inclined, to help.
While my injuries are considerable, I will face these challenges with the same resolve and determination I've done with the many challenges I've faced on my journey.
I have also decided that if I can't have a party in honor of this milestone, the number stays at 59 until I can celebrate with those near and far. Until then, please keep sending those healing vibes. I certainly feel and appreciate them.
With much love and gratitude to all - Renee
