I have set up this page to help defray the costs of Dan Wojciechowski’s medical bills and the continuing costs of his rehabilitation.
On October 30th, Dan went to Urgent care with severe back pain. After 4 hours and an MRI he was diagnosed with degenerative disk disease and sent home with an anti-inflammatory and pain pills. However, during the middle of the night he woke with debilitating pain radiating from his back and causing numbness in his extremities. He went to the emergency room and after several hours more he was diagnosed with transverse myelitis (Transverse Myelits ). This neurological disorder is believed to be (by the attending physicians) caused by Dan receiving the flu shot (Flu Shot Side Effects) during the week before his pain. This is something that is rare, but is listed as a possible cause of transverse myelitis and also as a possible side effect of the flu vaccine (related to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)).
Since October 31st Dan has had paralysis in his extremities and has been bed-ridden in a hospital. He is unable to walk under his own strength, has only patches of feeling throughout his body, and can’t maintain personal sanitary and grooming needs.
He is on a steady diet of steroids in order to stem the inflammation in his spine that has caused these issues. Every day he is subject to a barrage of testing to determine the effectiveness of his current treatment. He is also going through about 4 hours of physical therapy a day in order to increase his ability to walk. He has been gaining strength daily, but still can’t walk more than a few feet unassisted. They will be soon taking him off steroids to see if he continues to progress.
If he is able to progress he will be moved to an inpatient rehabilitation facility as he continues to regain feeling and strength in his extremities. This may take up to a month before he will then be released from the rehab facility. He will then be placed in his family’s care to continue outpatient rehabilitation. They hope that after a month or two he will be able to walk on his own power, and take care of himself sufficiently enough that he can go back to his own home. However, the overall prognosis is that if it all goes well, that it could take 6-12 months before he can go back to normal function.
As you can imagine, the medical bills for all of this will be extremely high. However, that is probably not the worst part. He started a new job only a few months ago and therefore does not have a lot of sick or vacation leave. He will shortly be out of both. Also, since he has not been at his job for 1 year FMLA will not cover this. Therefore, very shortly he will have increased medical bills and also no income. Disability will not kick in until 6 months after injury. Therefore, Dan will essentially have $0 in income for at least the next couple months while he regains his ability to be self –sufficient.
Dan and his family would be very thankful for any help or prayers that you are able to offer. All the money raised will be used to offset medical costs and to support Dan’s basic monthly expenses that he cannot cover due to his loss of income.
Thank you for your time and your support!
