As you may (or may not) know, we had to move our mom--Katie Hurley-- to a long term care facility a year and a half ago due to her advancing dementia. It was not easy as we'd so hoped to keep her at home. She is currently getting wonderful care in a private house in Portland where Mary lives. While we wanted to keep her in Alaska, the fact is that she is getting better care in a better facility at a better price than was available nearby. Nevertheless, the cost still significantly exceeds her long term care insurance and retirement income (we are currently contributing an additional $2,000-2,500 a month which will only increase as her care needs dictate).
Thus, we are asking for your help in caring for Katie. In return, we would like to give you something personal of hers from her collection of scarves, mirrors, and personal books.
March 30 (Seward's Day!) Mom will turn 99, so our fundraiser theme focuses on that number. Details below:
Who: You and 99 Friends (Or More)
What: Katie Hurley's Long Term Care Fund & 99th Birthday
Contribute $99 (or more) to her LTC fund and receive an item from her scarf, personal book, or mirror collection. Forward our appeal to 9 of your friends.
When: Make your donation today.
Where: As a thank you, please stop by the Loussac Library Alaska Room on March 30 from 4:30 to 6:30 to pick up a memento, have a piece of birthday cake, and record a birthday message to Katie (Many thanks to Barbara Hood for her donation of the space). Please RSVP if you intend to join us at the library.
Any funds collected that are not used toward Katie's care will be donated in the name "Friends of Katie Hurley" to the following 9 organizations that she has supported in the past: Anchorage Festival of Music, Out North Theatre, MyHouse Mat-Su, Sons of Norway Juneau Lodge, Juneau Public Library, Wasilla Public Library, ACLU, Alaska Women's Political Caucus, Alaska Democratic Party.
Mom is happy and content, and still gifts us with that same big smile. Susan and Mary
