On Saturday the 11th of July 2015 my sister and i found out that our Dad has Cancer. The cancer was found in the bones in his right shoulder and in his left kidney, after being misdiagnosed with a seized shoulder. To avoid the spread of the cancer he needs to have surgery to amputate what is left of his shoulder and have it replaced with a plate, and have his kidney removed in a separate operation.
The first surgery will be on the 30th of July to inject a foam like substance to protect his arteries. The second will be on the 1st of August to remove the bone and replace it with a metal plate. The 3rd surgery to remove his kidney will be done after he has recovered from the first two.
As my Dad lives in Thailand he has to pay upfront before they will perform the surgeries. He has also been out of Australia more than 5 years so Medicare will not cover any medical costs if he comes back.
So on the 29th of July he has to pay $40,000 to cover the first 2 surgeries. Then before he goes in for the 3rd, he has to pay between $12,000 and $35,000 depending on what way they decide to remove the kidney.
The problem my sister and I are faced with is that Dad has run out of money as he has been too unwell and in too much pain to work. As his daughters we cannot possibly sit around and do nothing so we have been asking anyone and everyone if they can think of a way we can come up with money fast!
I have made calls to the Australian embassy, anglicare financial services and the cancer council who unfortunately cannot help. I'm also waiting on calls back from the red cross, immigration and my local MP.
Two family members are very kindly lending a chunk of the money which is a huuuuge relief, but we still have a fair way to go.
