Meet Zenon — an 8-year-old boy with one very big heart.
What started as a little boy wanting to help his big brother’s family has grown into something we never could have imagined.
Zenon started collecting 10c cans and bottles after his big brother Kyle’s partner, Chloe, was diagnosed with Stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer.
Kyle and Chloe have three boys aged 14 months, 10 and 12, and their lives have been completely turned upside down while Chloe undergoes treatment.
Chloe is currently going through the incredibly tough “Red Devil” stage of chemotherapy, with surgery planned for early December.
Zenon wanted to do something himself to help, so Zenon’s Can Drive began.
He spends his spare time travelling around with us collecting cans and bottles from people across the Sunshine Coast, sorting them and cashing them in through Containers for Change.
But Zenon didn’t stop there.
Through his journey, he learned about another family in his school community — three beautiful children aged 7, 10 and 12, whose mum was receiving palliative care.
Sadly, these three children have now had to say goodbye to their beautiful mum, and we want to surround them with as much love and support as we possibly can during such a heartbreaking time.
Then we learned about another single mum who is terminally ill, with a 9-year-old daughter with special needs.
Suddenly, Zenon’s little can drive had grown into a mission to help 3 families and 7 children facing cancer, terminal illness and unimaginable loss.
Along the way, Zenon has brought together complete strangers, local businesses and an incredible community of people who simply want to help.
As his Can Drive has grown, we’ve also had so many beautiful people reach out and ask us:
“How can we donate if we don’t have cans?”
We also have people following Zenon’s journey from interstate who would love to support what he is doing but live too far away to give him their cans and bottles, or don’t have access to Containers for Change.
That is why we created this GoFundMe. ....
It gives those people another way to get behind Zenon and the little mission that started with him simply wanting to help his big brother Kyle, Chloe and their three boys through Chloe’s cancer journey.
For Zenon, this isn't just about raising a number on a page.
He wants to help make everyday life a little easier. When a family is dealing with cancer or losing someone they love, normal life doesn't stop — the groceries still need to be bought, fuel is still needed, appointments still have to be travelled to and the everyday bills continue to arrive.
Zenon wants what he raises to help take even a little of that pressure away, so these families can put more of their energy into what matters most — being together and getting through each day.
And with Christmas approaching, he also wants to make sure the 7 children across these 3 families still have something special to look forward to.
He wants to help put presents under their trees, bring a little excitement and happiness to Christmas morning and remind these children that, even through some of the hardest moments of their lives, there is a whole community thinking of them.
Every contribution — whether it’s a bag of cans, a few bottles or a donation through this page — is another person standing behind an 8-year-old boy who simply decided he wanted to make a difference.
We’ll continue sharing Zenon’s journey through his Zenon’s Can Drive Facebook page, where we share his collections, his progress and give shout-outs to the incredible people who are helping him along the way.
Zenon is only 8.
He can’t cure cancer.
He can’t take away their grief.
He can’t change what these families are facing.
But he can show them that they don’t have to face it alone.
One little 8-year-old.
Three families.
Seven children.
One very big heart.
Thank you for believing in Zenon, supporting his little mission and helping him make a very big difference.
