I am Lisa Plaisted, a close friend of the Randall family since Julia and Pete were babies. In their adulthood, I have seen both of these extremely intelligent and gifted siblings endure unusual physical and psychological agony, both acute and long term. They have had Zeke as a comfort until two nights ago.
Zeke, a 2-year-old Akita rescue dog who is the canine companion and best friend to Pete Randall and Julia Randall, has fought to beat the odds and live after being struck by a car and surviving near-fatal injuries.
In Julia’s words: “I was frantically looking for Zeke after he ran off chasing a deer. I found Zeke covered in blood and alone in the street with cars stopped around him. The people on-scene told me he was dead, but when I got to him, I could tell he was hanging on—barely. We put Zeke on a blanket and a kind stranger sped us to the emergency vet hospital. As we rode in the truck bed, I repeated to Zeke “We love you. Please hang on. You’re going to be okay,” but I could tell he was fading quickly and struggling to breathe. Pete was able to arrive just before techs wheeled Zeke off on a gurney. Pete held his head, telling him he’d be okay. We didn’t know if he’d make it through the night, but his will to live was stronger than his injuries.”
The impact of the car that hit Zeke caused a huge laceration that almost reached his organs. His pelvis was fractured on both sides, and he had dangerous internal bruising. While his initial treatment was $6,000 for the night, costs for surgeries and other treatments ultimately raised the vet bill to more than $17,000.
Zeke is a deeply cherished and integral part of Pete and Julia Randall’s life, he provides Pete with emotional support and constant companionship—if he’s not with Pete, he’s keeping Julia company. He’s a key part of helping Pete battle severe and disabling psychiatric conditions and they couldn’t let go of Zeke—especially after he battled so bravely to live. After losing two dogs to cancer last year, it was unbearable for them to think of losing this delightful, gentle and inquisitive rescue dog who has given so much love.
Your donation will go directly towards paying off the vet bill. Pete and Julia are appreciative of any amount you can donate. Thank you!
