Hello, my name is Charles. I'm a USAF veteran. Proudly served for a little more then 20 years. Upon my retirement I thought I was ready for civilian life. I'd saved well over 6 months of funds in case finding a civilian job didn't happen right away. I actually ended up working back on base in my old job, but as a civilian. Due to a tax problem I didn't have the skills to solve and my help has left the country with all mine and others tax documents, I lost my security clearance and the very well paying job. shortly after losing this job, there was a real estate crash in Nevada where I live, and I lost my home of 9 years. A divorce cost me a few dollars but it was negligible. I moved into an apt with my girlfriend (this was 2010, after losing the house). We moved from one complex into a nicer one in 2013, where we both, along with her daughter, enjoyed a modest but comfortable existence. We survived on her full time job and my retirement and disability pay (I'm a 50 percent disabled veteran, low back and neck injury from the military). And then the pandemic hit. My girlfriend was furloughed and then laid off from her job. We now were living off my retirement pay. The bills were killing us as I was paying for food, transportation (we have no vehicle so Uber is how we get around), rent for the two containers holding the 18,000 pounds of household goods I could not fit into an apartment and of course cell phone bills. One of the apt workers told us about a govt program that helped us during the height of the pandemic to stay in our apt. But we could not save to get into a more affordable apt. During Nov of 2022 we received another eviction notice and it was at this time we were told our getting assistance from the govt program was over. Two days before Thanksgiving we were unceremoniously evicted from our apt of nearly 9 years. We tried getting a Stay of Eviction to try and pack up and find another home. But after two days of trying to get it done, to include help from the courts and the creators of the documents we were trying to file, the system would not allow us to pay the $70 dollar fee to process our request. We were on the phone with the programs tech specialist who couldn't fix the problem right up till the Constable knocked on the door and kicked us out. My girlfriend was night allowed to grab any of her packed clothing or toiletries and because I had two handguns packed in my bags, I was allowed to take my clothing and toiletries. I will be turning 60 years old in Jan. This is not how I envisioned my life going but I can't give up. But I need help. And after 20 years of honorable service, as did my father and grandfather before me had, I feel like I've let the family down. Fifteen years ago, I was the one helping out my family and now I can't take care of myself.
