Thailand Veterinary Semester Abroad

As many of you know I have an un dying love for animals! So much so that I have dedicated my future career to servicing them! I have known that I have wanted to be a vet since my junior year of high school and came to CSU to fulfill that dream. While I still aspire to become a veterinarian, some components of that dream have shifted.

I started off college thinking I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life (become a small animal vet and own my own practice someday). I’ll tell you what, they aren’t lying when they say dreams drastically change from the beginning vs. the end of undergrad. I have been through so many new life experiences and have met so many wonderful people along the way that have shaped my dreams and future aspirations.

Come sophomore year of college. I was a few months into my job at a small animal clinic that I absolutely adore! However, that type of animal medicine was not what I was looking for as a future vet. That led me to some deep-thinking and a lot of trial and error with many classes and extracurriculars to find my “niche”. Fast forward end of sophomore year. I had finally decided whatever I do I want to work with wild and exotic animals. I found this incredible passion I have for animal and earth conservation. I am now completing junior year striving towards a Biomedical Science degree. While I absolutely love this degree and the classes that have come with it Junior year has been incredibly difficult and I have found myself searching for an “unique” experience that would cater to my new aspirations. So… I decided to study abroad my Fall 2019 semester in Thailand!

Let me tell you a little about this program! This program is a 20-credit hour program that spans the end of August through the end of November. The classes I am taking include Thai Culture and Language, Companion Animal Management, Veterinary Surgical Skills, Veterinary Clinical Practice and Skills Practicum, Marine Animal Anatomy, Biology, and Conservation with Lab, Elephant Medicine and Management and Wildlife Conservation and Care. I am extremely excited for each of these classes and that fact that they are all hands on.

This trip gives me a platform to put all this science knowledge I have been gaining while at CSU to practice. There is one little hiccup, I have been working hard with CSU’s abroad office as well as Loop abroad’s to get access to my federal financial aid for this semester while I was able to secure that I still have about $10,000 that I need to raise to pay the rest of the tuition. The tuition includes everything I will need and do in Thailand except for Airfare and spending money. That portion will come from my own pocket. While I will continue working 30 hours per week this summer to save as much as I can for this trip as well as applying for countless scholarships and grants, I still need your help!

I am one of 12 students admitted to this program and an incredibly proud of myself for the achievement. This program feels like it was specifically catered to me and my future aspirations and would be the dream of a lifetime to attend.
