Zay The Champ's International Golf Journey

Hi, my name is Zavien, I am 7 years old, in the second grade at Prospect Hill Academy Charter School, and I love playing golf more than any other game in the world! When I was five years old I watched "Space Jam" and saw Michael Jordan score a hole-in-one before entering Toontown. Since then, I have dreamed of achieving a hole-in-one myself. I fell in love with golf, and I began watching Tiger Woods and Good Good videos so much that my parents got me a plastic kids' golf set. They had to keep buying them over and over again because I just kept breaking them as I tried to hit the ball as far as I could. Then my auntie bought me my first real club set for my 6th birthday, and my dream of landing my first hole-in-one, and journey to playing professional golf was officially underway.

At first, we would frequent open fields along the Charles and Mystic Rivers like Magazine Beach and McDonald park so I would have room to hit the ball. A few weeks later my dad began bringing me to a golf range in Middleton called "Family Paradise Golf", and I began to develop a decent swing. Every time we went to the range strangers would notice my love for the game and offer me advice on my swing. Day after day and week after week I kept hitting the balls straighter and straighter, and farther and farther.

We went to the range so much that summer that the staff began telling my dad to "sign me up!" None of my classmates at school or church could understand why I loved golf so much but I couldn't go a day without thinking about golf, talking about golf, or wanting to practice my golf swing. Even if we couldn't go to the range, I would beg my dad to take me to a field so I could work on my swing, and play a few holes with my chipping net, or at least let me play in the basement. Thankfully, most of the time he said yes to the field.

Much to my surprise, my dad signed me up to play 9 holes with other kids my age that summer. It was August 17th, 2021, and was a day that I will never forget because it was the first time I set foot on a real golf course. It was the U.S. Kids Golf, Boston local tours, boys 6 and under summer championship game at the Newton Commonwealth Golf Course. When it was all said and done, even though I didn't score well, I was completely unbothered with coming in last place. I was just happy to play on a real golf course and with other kids my age for that matter.

After that, I played two more games in the fall season of 2021, and even though my score was getting lower and lower, I was no match for some of the other kids who had been playing for years. Then in the Spring of 2022, my dad signed me up to play all seven matches of the season and I finally finished in first place for the first time.

I finished in 1st place two more times that season with an average score of 9 over par, and became the U.S. Kids Golf- Boston Local Tours CHAMPION for boys 6 and under!

I earned priority status as a U.S. Kids golfer! This status qualifies me to play in some major multi-day international invitationals, and at some of the most beautiful golf courses around the world:

  • St. Francis Invitational 2023 which begins on January 9, 2023!
  • Copperhead Classic 2023 which begins on January 14, 2023!
  • Antalya Turkish Open 2023 which begins on January 28, 2023!
  • Desert Shootout 2023 which begins on February 25, 2023!
  • Jekyll Island Cup 2023 which begins on March 25, 2023!
  • The Big 5 South African Open 2023 which begins on April 3, 2023!
  • NCBA Uganda Open 2023 which begins on April 9, 2023!
  • Australian Masters 2023 which begins on April 17, 2023!
  • Canadian Invitational 2023 which begins on July 10, 2023!
  • Irish Open 2023 which begins on July 11, 2023!

Of course, I want to play at every single event! I mean, I worked hard for it and can't imagine anything more fun than traveling to play multiple rounds of golf. I pray that I will become a pro one day and will get to do this for a living. My dad says it would be too expensive and inconvenient to go to every international match this year. However, he also said it would be a shame to miss out on such a life-changing opportunity. He said, "if we can raise enough money we will be able to make it to 2 out of the 10 tournaments." I'm going to keep training and playing regardless but this is where you can help.
