Alec and Cherry embody the epitome of the adventurous spirit. They met on the internet, married in 2003, then sailed away from South Africa on their boat ‘Rainbow Gypsy’ because, as Cherry says, “Retirement is a challenge to DO something...We have always felt that one must do something constructive when retired...not just sit in God's waiting room.”
They sailed from South Africa to southeast Asia, across to Japan, and across the north Pacific Ocean, landing in Alaska with a dismasted boat. They survived all of this with good spirit. They got stuck in the United States because of Canadian Visa woes (where we became close friends) then sailed down to Mexico and into Central America, spreading their joy of living to all they met, showing the rest of us how it is done.
It’s time to gather the international community of people touched by the friendly open hearts of Alec and Cherry. They need your help.
Alec is in a hospital in El Salvador, diagnosed with ‘necrotizing pneumonia’, a rare complication of pneumonia that has not responded to antibiotics. This is a life threatening illness and the doctors in El Salvador are currently assessing the best treatment options. It is likely he will need surgery to remove part of his lung. Cat scans, biopsies, intravenous antibiotics, blood transfusions, and in-patient medical care all add up very quickly.
As a U.K. citizen, if Alec were in the U.K, his treatment would be covered. As it is, he has been too ill to get back home and they are stuck in El Salvador until he is either well, or well enough to travel.
Medical bills currently stand at $35,000, but are expected to exceed $50,000 should he need surgery.
