Hi everyone. This is Zac Boyes’ mom, Michelle.
Zac’s apartment flooded Monday evening, January 26th, during the winter storm in Oklahoma City. He opened his door and immediately stepped onto a water-soaked floor. He called me right away and within minutes, while he was showing me the damage, water burst through the sheetrock in his living room and shot straight at him like a firehose. He got completely soaked, standing in about an inch of water… in shorts. Yes, the child still wears shorts in a 17-degree winter storm!
Unfortunately, because of the weather, it took quite a while for help to arrive and shut the water off to the building. Everything in his living room & bedroom is destroyed, either by the standing water or the high-pressure blast from the water tank. His beloved (lol) computer, gaming system, furniture - so essentially everything. Of course, it’s just stuff, and I’m super thankful he’s okay and that it wasn’t worse, but my heart hurts for him. This was Zac’s first home on his own, and he had recently purchased new furniture, which makes it even more of a blow.
To make matters worse, the apartment management offered low-cost “renter’s insurance” through one of their contacts. When we went to file a claim, we found out it was actually liability insurance, which only covers damage to the structure in the case of his negligence - not his personal belongings. So, unfortunately, he was misled into believing he had coverage when he really didn’t.
We’re usually the kind of people who don’t like to ask for help, but here we are. Zac is going to have to start over, possibly in a different apartment altogether, and he’ll need financial help to do so—things like deposits, fees, replacing furniture, electronics, clothing, and basic household items. I would truly appreciate it if anyone reading this would share this fundraiser. If you’re able to donate any amount, we would be incredibly grateful.
I no longer have a Facebook account, so if you need to reach me, you can text me, or you can message Zac directly on Facebook.
