Zac’s long road to recovery.

Hi my name is Brittany and I’m fundraising for my younger brother Zac is someone you would best describe as a caring, happy go lucky, family focused young man who had the world at his feet. As a young 19 year old man, Zac was just beginning to establish the foundations that he needed to set himself up for a successful future. He had secured full time work in a job that he loved and was able to obtain finances to buy himself a new motorbike to get to and from work. Things were really looking up and he was pretty happy with himself.

But unfortunately, tragedy doesn’t discriminate between good and bad people and on the morning of 24th April at 8.15am Zac and his family’s world came crashing down. Zac’s mother, Tash, received the call that every mother of a teenage boy has nightmares about one day receiving……”Zac has been in a horrific motorbike accident, another motorist in a car did a U-turn in front of him resulting in Zac colliding with the side of her car at full speed, he is alive, but is being rushed to hospital for emergency surgery”……………..

We are 3 weeks down the track and Zac has now had multiple surgeries and faces a very very long road to recovery. He’s been told to expect a minimum of 12 months off work. That’s 12 months with no income.

Zac’s list of injuries are as follows:

• Closed head injury/loss of consciousness

• Right pulmonary contusions

• T7, T9 & T12 superior end plate fractures

• Right anterior and posterior column acetabular fracture

• Right midshaft femur fracture with femoral artery injury

• Right patella fracture with lipohemarthrosis

• Comminuted right calcaneal fracture

• Open right comminuted distal radius fracture

• Right flexor carpi ulnaris tendon injury

• Right comminuted intra-articular 5th metacarpal base fracture

• Multiple upper/lower limb lacerations and abrasions

This medical terminology might not mean a lot, but to sum it up, Zac is a very, very broken young man, who has significant injuries to his Femur, Hip, Knee, Heel and Wrist, and who now faces a long, tough road to recovery and years of ongoing rehabilitation. The outlook is somewhat unknown at this point in time, but one thing that is absolutely certain is that his rehab needs are going to be long term and costly. He is going to need a long list of medical aids to support his recovery. Due to his hip and femur injuries and surgeries Zac will require a medical aid adjustable lift chair and will need ongoing physical therapy sessions as well as assistance with everyday living, like showering, sleeping, dressing etc. No one ever plans for tragedy like this. And Zac now has no income to be able to prepare himself for the recovery of his young life. If you are able to help at all, we would be so appreciative of the assistance. Every dollar counts.
