Zachs Long Road to Recovery
We got a devastating call that our son Zach Wagner suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury during a
shallow dive in Huntington Beach California on July 4th 2021. He was rushed to UC Irvine Medical Center via ambulance, had emergency spinal surgery to repair his C4, C5 complete spinal injury. Zach is currently serving as a United States Marine at Camp Pendelton and graduated from Ankeny Centennial in 2017 where he was on the golf team. For those who don't know Zach, he can be best described as a go getter with the most positive outlook on life. He's always smiling,, laughing and an absolute joy to be around. At age 6 he told us he wanted to join the military, so at 17 he joined the Marines. He was scuba certified at age 16 and has a love of skydiving and had plans to get his skydiving certification. Zach spent most weekends surfing and when he came back to Iowa he enjoyed snow boarding and hanging out with his younger brother Adam. Zach will begin physical therapy as soon as he is released from intensive care to regain some function but will need help with daily activities for the rest of his life, including making his home handicapped accessible
