Zachs Autistic Service Dog

Don protégé
Hi Everyone,

Thank you for taking time out to read about our precious Son Zach and why we are asking for your help.

Zach is our lovable 5 year old Son. He has High Functioning Autism (level 2), Sensory Processing Disorder and High Anxiety.

We are trying to raise funds for Zach to receive and Autistic Assistant Service Dog.

 Who Is Zach?

Zach loves ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ that’s his world, Superhero’s, Music – Singing and Dancing, Karate, Running, Drawing and Colouring, Making videos, Gaming and making people smile.

Life can be very hard for Zach. He is such a kind, amazing, smart, funny, loving beautiful; little boy with a heart of gold and a contagious smile. But everyday things can be a real struggle for him.

We spend most of our day trying to help him cope with meltdowns, anxiety, self-regulation and Sensory Issues. He has trouble dealing with and processing emotions and finds the outside world very confronting.

How Is Zach Different?

At first glance, he appears just like any other little boy, however, in just a while you’ll notice that Zach:

·       Is obsessed with ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ and know everything about him. He has a Sonic plush toy and hat that goes everywhere with him.

·       He flaps his hands/arms and body to self-regulate himself. He cannot control this and can’t stand still.

·       Doesn’t like to make eye contact.

·       Finds it difficult to pick up on verbal and body cues for communication.

·       He cannot regulate his body temperature and will over heat even in winter.

·       Is a flight risk and will run off without notice, as he finds it difficult to follow instructions/commands. He has no sense of danger and is prone to wandering off (He will run into traffic)

·       He is obsessed with routine and any small change results in a massive meltdown, screaming. He cannot control this. He will sometimes throw things, become aggressive and sometimes hurt himself or others.

·        He has an exceptional memory and an eye for detail that most of us would miss. This is an asset.

·       He has many obsessive behaviours flicking, lining objects up, which cannot be moved.

·       Zach gets brushed using the ‘Wilbarger Therapressure Protocol’ every 2 hours to help regulate his body.

·       He has a severe anxiety every day to the point of vomiting.

·       Zach has a Sensory Overload Issues where he doesn’t like smells, big crowds, certain textures, tastes and loud noises (He wears ear muffs).

·       He will try his best to make friends but finds it hard to keep them through his obsessive play and problems in communication social skills. Which he cannot control. This for him is devastating as he doesn’t understand why.

After many tears, sleepless nights and research we have found

                                  Autistic Assistant Service Dogs

This autistic assistant service dog will be utterly life changing for our Son and our whole family. An autistic service dog would help Zach to navigate the world, be more independent, reduce the number of meltdowns and make his world a better place.

The dog is specifically trained to Zachs special needs.

The Service Dog Would Help With The Following:

·       Self-Stimulation: the dog will signal behaviour to the handler, handler may choose to stop.

·       Self-Injurious Behaviours: The dog will disrupt behaviour.

·       Over-stimulation/meltdown/shutdown: The dog will apply deep pressure tasks – steps on Zachs foot, paws on lap, lie on body.

·       Poor Balance/Motor Control: The dog will counter balance and brace for stability.

·       Disorientation: The dog will find the car, go home, find other specific places.

·       Auditory Scene Analysis: The dog will alert for important sounds. Eg: fire alarm.

·       Emotional Well being: The dog will sense anxiety and relieve by deep pressure tasks.

·       Flight and wandering off: The dog will be trained to track Zach through smell and will be sometimes tethered to Zach to keep him safe in public places.

·       Sleep Independently: The dog will sleep with Zach to keep him settled and relaxed through the night.

·       Companionship: To help with Self-confidence and making connections with other people.

·       The dog will keep Zach settled throughout his day and will be constantly by his side.

Why We Need Your Help:

Attaining a Service Dog is not an immediate process and takes up to 2 years for full training. The cost of the Service Dog is $30,000.

Unfortunately, this is not something we can fully fund ourselves with all other specialist appointments and ongoing costs for Zach.

These service dogs do not have any government support funding, which has made it very hard to afford.

This is why we are asking for your help!

An assistant dog would change our little boys life.

Reducing Zachs negative world, help him be independent, reduce the number of meltdowns each day and to help keep him safe. A best friend for life that can help him through his darkest days.

Your Kind And Loving Donation Will Help Cover:

·       Purchase of the puppy

·       Educator/Trainer

·       ‘L’ plate stage (2-12 months)

·       ‘P’ plate stage (12 – 18-24 months)

·       Full Service Dog

I have found a local service dog trainer who will train the dog. The dog will be trained over a 2 year period with intensive training.

The dog will be trained the first year to pass basic training and service dog requirements. The second year the dog will be trained to Zachs special needs. Locate and tethering, applying pressure, sensory overload in public etc.

As his parents, We are asking our family, friends and anyone out there who could please help our Son get his service dog.

Anything helps, even the smallest donation amount. It all adds up.

Even if you’re unable to donate, could you please take a second to SHARE this on your facebook page. It would mean the world to us.

Underneath his challenges and trials he faces. He is an amazing little boy, determined to face and fight through every day, to learn and be more special than he already is.

He melts our hearts and makes us smile every day.

Please help Zach get his Service Dog and make him smile too.

On behalf of Zach and our family, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity.
