Hi! My name is Zachary Pletcher and I am a Rockford University BFA Musical Theater Major.  Our school was invited to perfrom at the International Fringe festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is an honor to be invited and to perform in the world recognized theater festival. Twenty students and three professors will be embarking on this once in a lifetime journey.

We are fortunate to say that the school's Students Opportunity Fund has awarded us $37,500 to attend as a group. However, this covers less than half the total cost per individual student. Students are still responsible for $1,870 + air fare. Luckily, the school's portion covers all payments until early May when a payment of $750 is due. The remaining balance after that point is due early June. It has always been a dream of mine to perfrom across the pond as an actor. This will be something that I will never forget and it will be a great first step in my career as an actor.

Fringe Information:

“The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world and takes place every August for three weeks in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city…In 2015 there were 50,459 performances of 3,314 shows in 313 venues, making it the largest ever arts festival in the world.”

The festival’s story dates back to 1947 during the aftermath of the Second World War. It was created in an effort to promote peace across nations and a cross-cultural appreciation of the arts. As an off-shoot of the Fringe, in 1958 the Festival Fringe Society was created; a registered charity, which has three objectives:

1. Providing support, advice and encouragement to all the amazing artists, producers and venues who create the Fringe each year, from help with choosing a venue or writing a press release, to advice on touring, free access to rehearsal space, and professional development activities and events.

2. Assisting the audiences who come to Edinburgh by helping you navigate what’s on offer with comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date information and ticketing.

3. Promoting this wonderful and unique festival to the rest of the world.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the product of a global effort to promote international peace and civic engagement through the arts, and have the opportunity to exchange viewpoints, artistically and philosophically, on a global stage. This is impoartant! Peace is something that should be spread, especially in the world today. Art has the power to change the world we live in. This festival would give us the opportunity to successfully communicate to an international audience the university’s values, which pride themselves on the ability of students to be able to do such things. Aside from the obvious art related benefits, this experience would allow students to deepen their understanding of history and various world cultures, as well as expand upon their social skills. Even during the preparation process, students have already dealt with the financial reality that this opportunity presents personally, as well as on the school. This festival is a “professional and practical” experience that would certainly prepare us as performers and technicians for a successful and fulfilling career in our chosen tracks.
