Grief and sorrow seem shallow words when announcing the unexpected passing of a beloved son, brother, and uncle.

In the early hours of May 4, 2024, Zachary was found having a medical episode due in part to an extremely elevated blood glucose. Responding emergency personnel rushed him to the hospital where he coded. The staff attempted to resuscitate him for over an hour.

We are in shock that Zachary is gone and we are struggling to make sense of the void in our lives.

Zachary posted these poems on his Facebook and Instagram in 2022 and I feel like they express this moment better than I could.

Waves crash over me

inside my head

Torrents of thoughts

I cannot see

Cannot grasp

Cannot know

Whispers of dreams I had

When I was new

Forgotten

Lost

Hidden

And yet so close

Suffocating and stifling

Paralyzing

The potential of Eternity

Seas of lives I could have had

Moments I lost before

And yet after

I knew they could be

Spilling from my eyes

Waterfalls of what never was

Regrets weigh down my weary step

Upon this lonesome trail,

While light ahead uplifts my soul

And says “you will prevail.”
