On Saturday, June 4,2016, my family and I will celebrate the life and legacy of my son, Zachary Satchel Smalls with our 2nd Annual Foundation Scholarship event. Zachary was a son, brother, and uncle to his family and friends.
On Saturday morning, July 7, 2012, Zach's football team (Got Game) won their League Championship game and later that same day, while walking across the street to celebrate their victory at a cookout, Zach's life was cut short. Zachary was hit and killed by a driver who ignored the speed limit of 35 mph and was only charged a $500 fine, 100 hours of community service and allowed to upgrade his driver's license from a class ( B) to a class(A). This day will never be forgotten; Zack would have turned 23 on his birthday -- August 7, 2012.
Zachary was an outstanding football player. He played at Fredrick Douglas and Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High Schools. He was a charter member and one of the first team captains of the Football Team in 2006, and was a graduated of the inaugural class of 2008 of the Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School. He attended Ferrum College in Virginia, and was a member of their football team. One of his college coachs stated, " Zachary was a student of the game."
To complement Zach's educational journey, two students, one each from Douglas and Wise will receive a scholarship in Zachary's name.
We will also hold a back to school drive in August.
