This is Zach. He is a 10-year-old Silken Windhound and I want to tell you his story. But to understand his story, you need to know a little bit about me. I am M. David Scoble and in my spare time I am a writer, a teacher and I am a disabled veteran.
My old job took me around the world but now I live with my family and dogs in Massachusetts.

In 2015, my second Windhound, Wil, passed and my first, Moogi, was deathly ill. We had been around the world in the military, but I separated in 2008, and we settled into civilian life. Zach was a 1-year-old in Florida where his breeder hoped he would be a part of her kennel, but Zach was far too gentle and passive for such activities.

Zach traveled to live with us in Maryland, where he met 12-year-old Moogi and immediately began guarding and watching over our sick dog. Moogi passed a month after Zach arrived. Zach was gentle and loving in his adopted brother's last days.

Some years passed and Truffles came to live with us, our children and Zach. My work took us to Tokyo, Japan where Zach became a show dog who was always a bride's maid and never a bride. There, he and Truffles had a beautiful "oopsie" litter. Their five puppies now live happily all across Japan.

Years passed and we changed jobs and finally landed in Massachusetts where I work, write and teach English as a second language. Zach at 10 was a genteel old man wo would give nothing but love.

Yesterday, October 1st, I took Zach and Truffles to our local dog park to have some fun. On arrival, a dog brutally attacked Zach without warning. I was bit as well, but Zach took the worst of it. I carried Zach, bleeding, to the car and we rushed to the emergency vet.

He suffered massive trauma, a serious pneumothorax, a punctured muscle wall, broken ribs and a punctured lung. Zach was dying and went into surgery at 10pm at night. Now, he is mostly stable but may need more surgery if he is leaking air into his chest.

The cost is tremendous. Fifteen to twenty thousand dollars. Zach could use some help. I don't ask for help lightly. If you wish to help pay for Zach's recovery, please consider sending us something to help. It's OK if you don't. Consider giving to your local shelter or volunteering instead. I just hope Zach's story means something to you. Anything we raise will go to Zach's medical bills and recovery. I will donate anything more to a local shelter in Zach's name.

Please consider helping me with my beautiful boy who has always given only love to everyone he meets.
