Max and his family need your help. Max has been diagnosed with Leukemia and will be in the hospital for the foreseeable future for treatment. He was accepted into a special trial treatment with teams from St. Jude and Cook Children's Medical Center.
Heartbreaking news: Max developed a rash on his lower back about two weeks ago and was taken to his pediatrician. His parents were told it was most likely a heat rash given the Texas climate this time of year and given a cream to apply to his back. Over the next week his rash got a bit worse and his legs seemed to be bruising a lot easier. On Friday when picking him up from daycare the provider said Max had been a bit irritable and didn't want to eat much. When they got home Max had a noticeable limp. The doctors office was called again and Max was told to come in the next morning. Throughout the night Max began to not be able to put weight on his leg and would fall when trying to walk, clearly aggravated that his legs weren't doing what he wanted them to do. At the doctors office the pediatrician managed to piece together the sudden onset of symptoms and Max was immediately taken to Cook Children's Medical. As soon as he got there the test revealed he in-fact did have Leukemia. To narrow down what type of Leukemia it was a marrow test would need to be taken, and to even have the surgery Max would need multiple blood transfusions to get his red blood count up high enough to even have the test. Max received his test Monday and the sub type was confirmed.
The treatment is a trial study XVII where about 1000 children are accepted from 2017-2026, and aims to increase the survival rate while decreasing complications from the different medications. He has already received chemo into his spine to try and protect his spine and brain from the cancer spreading.
Max is my nephew, his father is my twin brother. His wife is an engineer, and he is in school to further his Engineering degree. They worked it out so that he could focus on school full time, now he wont be able to continue to go to school. She only has a few weeks of vacation and Max will be getting treatment for a long time. They wont be able to stay at their hose as even after treatment for the first few months doctors need him to be within a half hour of the hospital. They just bought their house last year and selling it isn't the most viable option. During this time bills wont stop coming, new medical bills will amass, and they will need help as these mount up. This money is for immediate medical bills, missed work, normal bills, and the absence of a daycare option for years. The HVAC system to the house (once they are allowed to go home) will need to be modified into a full HEPA system as any small infection would get him extremely sick.
Even after treatment Max will not be able to go into daycare for years as his immune system will be highly compromised. Having both parents work full time will be a hard thing to pull off. To cut money instead of night classes the more viable option is to simply suspend furthering his degree to be able to be with Max.
Even if you do not have the resources for a donation, please share as Max and his family absolutely needs your help. Thank you.
