A Random Night has chosen to help support Mighty Chester!  Their next event on February 29, 2020 at the Vouge in Miramichi will be in support of Chester and his future needs.

Chester is a 2 year old boy who has been diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy as a result of brain damaged caused at birth. This limits the use of all four of his limbs, it affects his ability to eat and swallow, and has also resulted in significant vision impairment. He has a stridor caused by a soft larynx that collapses when he inhales, often resulting in noisy breathing.

To help Chester grow properly, he had a gastric tube (g-tube) placed in his stomach in June, 2018 and now receives all feedings through his g-tube.

Along with specialist appointments at the IWK in Halifax, Chester regularly attends physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy at Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation in Fredericton, as well as here in Miramichi. He has made trips to Ontario for intensive MEDEK therapy sessions to help with improving his gross motor skills and balance.

With his wonderful team of doctors, and therapists, there has been slow improvements with Chester. He’s now starting to gain more weight and he has had some improvement in his core strength, he’s working hard to play with toys, and is exploring alternative ways of communication as her is currently non-verbal.

Chester’s family includes 3 sisters Amelia-May, Josephine-Grace, and Evelyn-Rose; his mother, Cheryl and father Darren (Bigdaz)

Mighty Chesters’ Journey with MEDEK Therapy

Chester was born August 21, 2017, the youngest of the four Walker kids for his parents Darren and Cheryl.  Not long after his very rough start to life, he began showing signs that he wasn’t progressing in his development like most kids and that his legs and arms were very stiff.

Although Chester has not had specific diagnosis at this point, the Neurologist at the IWK in Halifax, NS has said that he checks all the boxes for Cerebral Palsy.  Cerebral Palsy is a form of brain damage that happens either before, during, or shortly after birth and affects muscle tone, reflexes, coordination and control of the body.

Chester struggles with other issues, including eating on his own and gaining weight, so in June 2018, he had a feeding tube placed and now receives food through his g-tube.

With his wonderful team of doctors, and therapists, there has been slow improvements with Chester.  He’s now starting to gain more weight and he has had some improvement in the strength of his neck and has started to show interest in toys.

However Chester is still unable to sit up on his own and has very little balance.

Darren and Cheryl are making arrangements for Chester to start MEDEK therapy which they are hopeful will help increase Chester’s core body tone.

Curevas MEDEK is a form of physiotherapy that focuses on improving gross motor skills with specific exercises that are aimed at training movements that lead to sitting, standing and walking.  More information about this form of therapy can be found on the Canadian MEDEK Centre website (http://medek.ca/about-medek/)

To start this therapy, Chester is required to attend intensive therapy sessions at the Canadian MEDEK Centre in Thornhill, Ontario.  Cheryl and one of her daughters will be traveling with Chester later in February for a week of intensive therapy sessions.  Then will return to continue the therapy sessions at home.

These therapy sessions will be on going and are not covered through Medicare.  Although a portion of the cost of the physiotherapy session will be covered through private insurance, the majority of the expenses for this initial trip and future trips for this therapy are self-funded.
