A Cow for Sun Dog Farm
Donation protected
Sun Dog Farm is a small Biodynamic Farm and Homestead in Blairsville, GA. My husband Elliot and myself farm the acreage utilizing ecological farming methods and focus on preserving the biological integrity of our farm organism. We bought the farm officially after 2+ years of leasing the property this year on my birthday (yay!)
The farm was originally farmed by the Biodynamic Expert and Agricultural Consultant Hugh Lovel and along with his equally inspiring partner in business and life, Shabari Bird , the farm was used to educate eager learners about the interconnectedness of nature and our expanding Universe and our role as stewards of a broken landscape.
We are working our hardest to restore this vision to the farm, bringing learners back into the fields and incorporating sustainable growing methods into the collected consciousness of the State of Georgia. Our mission is to grow enough food to feed ourselves and Elliot's parents, (who also live on the farm,) and sell the excess to our local community.
It was our plan this year to bring a cow back into the circle of farm life here at Sun Dog and we have one picked out and ready to pick up. Unexpectedly, one of our CSA drops fell through due to lack of interest in our area, (building community takes time,) and we need a little extra cash cushion to cover the cost of getting her to the farm.
Our previous cow was from a commercial dairy operation and had a chronic respiratory condition. She lived a beautiful life and was put in the freezer to get us through the winter. She was a Holstein /Jersey cross, a pretty large cow, and we noticed through her size that she was beginning to impact the pasture.
Compaction could be seen in what weeds were presenting themselves and we decided to let the pasture breathe before bringing on a new cow. We also wanted to go for something smaller, something that we could incorporate into the farm organism with minimal impact.
That brings us to Annie ! Annie is a Dexter Cow , which is a small heritage breed from Ireland. They are small, calve easily, and will likely provide you with around 2 gallons of milk a day, a manageable
harvest for two individuals on a small farm.
She is perfect and we can't wait to meet her but now we need your help!! Your donation to this cause will ensure that Sun Dog Farm incorporates the transformative nature of a cow into the farm organism without putting us into a tight financial space as a small farm trying to build interest in the local community. You will allow us to bring fertility back into the farm through handmade compost from her manure and sustain us and others with her life giving milk.
Please Consider throwing us whatever you can and spreading the word. We only have until July 21st to raise the money and we could use all the love we can get!
Thank you so much for your time and we look forward to continuing our relationship with nature and the amazing people that support local, clean food!
