Hello, Family and Friends my dog Smokey (a Siberian Husky) was injured in an unprovoked dog attack by Rocky (a pit bull) on Friday, March 5, 2021 at my apartment building
In the attack, Smokey suffered severe wounds that needed to be treated immediately under sedation. Although the wounds were treated, pain medications and antibiotics were prescribed, Smokey still faces a difficult recovery. After the initial visit on Friday, we had to take him back to the vet Saturday morning because he was in so much pain that he was sleepless and restless all night. At that time, he was given another pain injection and more oral pain meds in addition to what was already prescribed. On Monday March 8th, we had another vet visit to remove the draining tubes from his side. At this point, he still wasn't holding anything down so he was prescribed nausea medicine. He was still on pain meds and the anti-nausea med was not effective so he was still not able to eat. On Tuesday March 9th, we were able to wean him off his pain meds, but we noticed bleeding and an open wound, so we made yet another visit to the vet today (Wednesday 3/10). He was kept at the vet to drain the fluid from his wound that was accumulating into his leg and was given an antibiotic injection to prevent further infection. He may still require surgery, but we will know by Friday, 3/12. He is also scheduled for another follow-up visit for March 19th. We have been providing around the clock care and comfort to Smokey. Since Smokey requires medications to be administered to him during the day, we have been transporting him to ensure he has the round the clock attention he needs while we are at work. On the advice of the vet, we are limiting Smokey’s movements and keeping him in one place. So now we are displaced from our home in order to follow the vet’s advice and ensure Smokey continues to get the round the clock attention he needs. Additionally, his care is becoming an increasingly bigger financial burden on us since we have had to continually to pay for ongoing vet services, medication, and now a surgical procedures.
The attack has traumatized Smokey to the point that he has not eaten in four days. He is also so fearful that he is both incontinent and constipated because of his injuries and inability to protect himself. According to our veterinarian, had Smokey not been the size he is, the initial attack would have been fatal, but at this point, he may still be in danger of losing his life as he is still in critical condition. My family and I are meeting with the vet to discuss the actual cost. Please help us get our baby well and home again. We long for the day my sweet Smokey will smile and run around again. ANYTHING WILL HELP AND ANYTHING WILL BE APPRECIATED!
UPDATE MARCH 13TH:
Smokey ate a full bowl of food and he looks more happy today than he has throughout this entire incident. Unfortunately Smokey's road to recovery is still going to be tough and is still a day by day situation. We plan on having him with us at home till Tuesday. On Tuesday he gets another procedure done and hopefully we see progress by Friday. Friday is a big day, by then we will know if we move forward or if we have to make a tough decisions.
UPDATE MARCH 16TH:
The vet said Smokey is healing as he should be so Friday we can hopefully move forward to the next step of his healing
Today was a good day everyone at the vet was so sad earlier in the week when we had to sit down with the vet and were told the infection was very serious. Today however everyone was just so happy to see him when I went to pick him up EVERYONE was telling me he looked so good, he looks much better, its a miracle, and that he is such a sweet boy.
UPDATE MARCH 20TH:
Smokey is progressing slowly but surely. They were able to stitch part of his wounds closed Friday but others continue to remain open and need more time to heal before being stitched. In another week they will see what else they can stitch closed. In the mean time they continue to do wet to dry dressings.
The vet estimates another 4-6 weeks of this still.
UPDATE MARCH 27TH:
We successfully did our first bandage change at home! Smokey did great! We have been taking him to the vet Tuesdays and Fridays for bandage changes and for more procedures. Now we're doing bandage chances daily at home for the next couple weeks. Smokey will see the vet this Friday hoping and praying there will be more improvement!
Thank You for your continued prayers and donations. We appreciate every single one of them!
