At Mt. Sinai hospital on June 28th Baby Dean was born he weight 6 lbs 6 oz, he was breathing with in a safe range, heart beating with a safe range. He was transported to Sickkids Hospital from Mt. Sinai. The surgeons from Sickkids agreed that Dean would need surgery on July 2 for his hernia because the hernia was preventing him from digesting his food plus it was placing further complications to his lungs and heart. However the parents were told that this would be the first operation for his hernia, main goal for the first operation would be to repair the lining and fix the bulge. The second operation would be the part under his rib cage. The third operation would be to repair his heart. Each time there is recovery and then time for Dean to get stronger.
The July 2nd operation was a success baby Dean’s heart was strong enough to endure the 2 hour operation and the doctor’s repaired the portion of the hernia that was bulging. Within a few days’ baby Dean was digesting his food, having proper bowel movements and his heart and lungs were still functioning within a safe range. Mom was able to capture some beautiful smiles from her precious baby now that he was recovering from his surgery. The news and joyous moments were short lived because the part of the hernia (the space) that could not be repaired right way has created a place for baby Dean’s lung to expand too or move into, this in turn creates more strain on his little heart so within two weeks’ time Baby Dean aka SUPERMAN would endure another surgery to repair the space/cavity. Six weeks passed and Dean was able to come home to Timmins.
By the first week of November Dean was back in Toronto to undergo a more delicate operation. The valve in Dean’s heart was failing and he had a hole in his heart and this needed to be repaired immediately. Mom (Keisha) Dad (Mathieu) and some family members we there for support and the remaining family members all waited anxiously by the phone. Several hours later Our Superman made it through the operation and it appeared he would recover. The outcome was great! Weeks went by and Baby Dean was growing stronger and stronger until they had the best news possible he could come home before Christmas!
Today 5 months later Dean aka Superman is back in Toronto struggling to stay alive. Baby Dean’s Heart is failing. The amazing doctor’s at SickKids Hospital in Critical Care Unit are fighting to keep Dean alive. His heart rate was 220 beats per minute, the shock waves are not being dispersed properly and the muscle that surrounds his heart is weak. Our Superman is struggling and at 9 months old he is fighting harder than anyone could ever imaging. As of today April 8, 2016 Dean’s heart beat is still 185 bpm, on a breathing tube, has many monitors hook up to him, and several doctors trying to find out what can be done to fix his heart and why this happened all while keeping him alive. Mathieu and Keisha are by his side at all times and are struggling with every emotion all while trying to be strong for their baby Dean aka Superman.
Any donations made will be greatly appreciated and will go towards the costs related to Mom being in Toronto and to help Dad (in-between working) get to Toronto to be with his first born son without losing their home or employment in the process. I will keep everyone informed as to Dean’s condition and further update this site to ensure everyone is well informed. Once again our family greatly appreciates all who can do anything to help.
Thank You
Anna - Grandmother of Baby Dean
