Support Ryan Fay's Hit-and-Run Recovery #FaysArmy

Hi, I'm Coco, and I (along with a dedicated community of friends and loved ones) am fundraising for our dearly beloved friend and sibling, Ryan Fay Alderman. This past February, Ryan was injured and hospitalized as the victim of a hit and run on Roxboro Road in Durham, North Carolina. Ryan was crossing at a crosswalk after waiting for the warning lights on the road to start flashing, and had checked and double-checked before stepping out into the street, but these pedestrian precautions were no protection from a speeding SUV and a careless distracted driver. Since this driver sped away after realizing what they had done, Ryan has been left with responsibility for hospital bills on top of everything involved in processing and recovering from a traumatic and violent injury.
As friends and chosen family, we banded together after the accident to provide tangible and moral support as we could with food trains, gifts, letters, and visits, and now it is time for us to step up and support our family once again. Ryan has made incredible recovery from their compound leg fracture through physical therapy and hard work and has remained brave, optimistic, and honest in the face of the constant physical pain and abrupt life changes that have followed the accident. Now, after months of appointments and phone calls and forms and paperwork circling between hospital and insurance representatives... the final bill is here.
We are fundraising with a goal of $11,000 dollars, which breaks down as follows:
$8,500 for deductible payment
$2,000 for physical therapy
$500 (and any extra $ raised!) to account for processing fees to the fundraising platform and to support Ryan getting back to their routines and ways of life before the accident

In addition to offering your financial support, other ways you can serve #FaysArmy include being present and vigilant every time you get behind the wheel and advocating for pedestrian safety in your own neighborhoods and communities.

After the accident and ambulance ride, Ryan spent several days in the hospital receiving emergency treatments and preparation for operation. Ryan's right leg was broken from impact, with a compound fracture/open fracture of the right tibia. The skin was punctured in the break and required surgery. Other surgical procedures included the insertion of an intramedulalary implant with interlocking screws and debridement/surgical removal of foreign material at the side of the injury. Outside of hospital, surgery, and physical therapy costs, other costs include the 7 medications prescribed upon discharge for pain management and recovery, cane/wheelchair/walker rentals, and hourly wages lost due to inability to work in recovery.
Ryan was bedridden immediately following hospital discharge, and has progressed through several stages of assistance from mobility aids and leg braces. Now Ryan is up and about again, attending concerts, reading outside in the sun, and even walking greenway trails like the NCMA's.
In addition to drawing and making comics, Ryan has spent this time painting, writing, jewelry making, and altering and upcycling second hand clothing. And watching lots and lots of movies - check out their letterboxd account (latebutcoming) to see just how many, and to read their incisive reviews.
