My Mom's Cancer Story

Hello everyone, my name is Alesandra, my mom's oldest daughter. I write this on behalf of my mom Paula. Writing this I find it hard to even find the words to put on here, my heart is broken and so I write to you all in hopes that my story reaches multiple people. My mom needs help, and I am praying this will be a start.

My mom as some of you may know has been a cancer patient for the past 30 years with thyroid cancer. For 100% of my life with her I've seen my mom battle this disease from surgeries, to chemo, radiation, therapy, etc. Recently as of last June 2021 her thyroid cancer came back rendering one of the biggest surgeries she has ever had. My mom had part of her jawbone removed and a plate replaced to take out this cancer that has metastasized. (Meaning its spread through out her body) Unfortunately her cancer has mutated into cancerous tumors rendering surgery almost impossible to the locations its housed in her body. Doctor's have given my mom a chance at life with experimental medication. Medicine that is only available to a very select small group of people due to this cancer mutation having no cure and it being a strand that doctor's have limited experience with. For the past year my mom has been in and out of hospitals fighting everyday to continue living. From emergency ambulance rides, in hospital stays, and many sleepless nights she continues to fight.

As most of you imagine medical bills in our house have sky rocketed, but it comes at a cost to make her life pain free and as comfortable as possible. One ambulance ride costs $500, one of her in stay hospital visits over $10,000, medication anywhere from $40 and up. While this fundraiser is only covering a partial cost of ongoing treatment, it gives doctor's the chance to save her life. Anything would help ease the financial burden my family has faced during this time, covering hospital visits, medication, medical tools for use at home, etc.

My mom has been so strong through all of this, with the limited energy she holds she still manages to hold a smile on her face. Many of you have had the pleasure of crossing paths with this loving human being. Its been incredible to know more than ever how many people my mom's love has touched. My mom has always put others before herself, never once hesitating to care for anyone who needed her.

The heartbreaking treatment choices have been hard to make. Having to have administer chemo treatment to destroy the cancer cells, but it could lead to blood clots. To counter that doctor's have given her blood thinning medications which ultimately lead to a brain bleed. While we feel helpless, she's always placed her faith in the medical experts and gives her mind and body in the arms of God for safe keeping.

My house is four individuals, my father, my sister, my mom, and myself. My father works and also is a caregiver to my mom. My sister has taken a gap year after graduating high school to also care for my mom while saving to go to college if God willing. I fight through tears writing this, with my mom at stage 4 cancer I speak for my family when I ask for help during this vigorous time that is in front of my mom. Medicamento que solo está disponible para un pequeño grupo muy selecto de personas debido a que esta mutación del cáncer no tiene cura y es una rama con la que los médicos tienen experiencia limitada. Durante el último año, mi mamá ha estado entrando y saliendo de los hospitales luchando todos los días para seguir viviendo. Desde viajes en ambulancia de emergencia, hospitalizaciones y muchas noches de insomnio, ella sigue luchando.

Como la mayoría de ustedes imaginan, las facturas médicas en nuestra casa se han disparado, pero tiene un costo para hacer que su vida sea lo más cómoda posible y libre de dolor. Un viaje en ambulancia cuesta $ 500, una de sus visitas hospitalarias de más de $ 10,000, medicamentos desde $ 40 y más. Si bien esta recaudación de fondos solo cubre un costo parcial del tratamiento en curso, le brinda al médico la oportunidad de salvar su vida. Mi mamá ha sido tan fuerte a través de todo esto, con la energía limitada que tiene, todavía se las arregla para mantener una sonrisa en su rostro. Muchos de ustedes han tenido el placer de cruzarse en el camino de este amoroso ser humano. Ha sido increíble saber más que nunca a cuántas personas ha tocado el amor de mi mamá. Mi mamá siempre ha puesto a los demás antes que a sí misma, sin dudar ni una sola vez en cuidar a cualquiera que la necesitara.

Las desgarradoras opciones de tratamiento han sido difíciles de hacer. Tener que administrar un tratamiento de quimioterapia para destruir las células cancerosas, pero podría provocar coágulos de sangre. Para contrarrestar eso, los médicos le dieron medicamentos anticoagulantes que finalmente provocaron una hemorragia cerebral. Mientras nos sentimos impotentes. ella siempre ha depositado su fe en los expertos médicos y entrega su mente y cuerpo en los brazos de Dios para su custodia.

Mi casa somos cuatro personas, mi padre, mi hermana, mi madre y yo. Mi padre trabaja a tiempo completo y también cuida a mi madre. Mi hermana se ha tomado un año sabático después de graduarse de la escuela secundaria para cuidar a mi mamá mientras ahorra para ir a la universidad si Dios quiere. Lucho entre lágrimas escribiendo esto, con mi mamá en la etapa 4 del cáncer. Hablo por mi familia cuando pido ayuda durante este tiempo vigoroso que está frente a mi mamá.
