Developing Athletes

We are looking to raise money for Nathan to join the boys competitive gymnastics team. He has received a personal invitation and we as a family agree this is a fantastic and timely opportunity for Nathan to continue developing as an athlete and a well-grounded young man. His brothers and I have discussed at length what the financial and time sacrifices look like and agree to commit ourselves as a family, but we need a financial miracle for this to really work. Because of the personal invitation the team coach is also working to find funding for Nathan; however, it will not cover all the fees. It takes about $4,000 per year. $1,640 for competitions, $200 for gear, gym and coach fees, travel and unknown expenses. I will continue to work two jobs and donate my time to the gym to help offset cost: full time at the university and per diem at the hospital. My contract does not start until Aug so financially - gymnastics is not going to happen without help.

I believe in this child's potential as a person and as an athlete.  We all know that where there is a will, there is a way to accomplish regardless of circumstance, but we also know a little help can connect the right people, places, and events. Thank you for taking time to consider him as well.

If you know Nathan than you have seen his natural talents in sports as well as academia. If you would choose to help sponsor him, we would be both humbled and grateful. OPTIONAL: please message me with your name and address so Nathan can write a personal thank you note. You do NOT need to tell us what you donated, every penny and nickle is sponsorship for him to be grateful for.

Miracles happen all the time, so.... Full Disclosure: All funds will go for sports fees. If there are extra I will sign the other boys up for a season of soccer (Joel) and flag football (Trent) and volunteer my time as coach (per Joel's request). This is what they have asked to participate in. If there is really extra, I will create a savings fund for the boys athletic journeys.

I wasn't really sure how to start the description for this site so I did an impromptu interview of Nathan. You might enjoy his responses.

I asked Nathan why doing gymnastics is important to him and he replied, "gymnastics is important to me because it connects me to people who like sports like I do, and it helps me learn to do it the right way and safely. And, I can jump around without getting into trouble for jumping on the furniture."

What do you believe you will get out of experience? I believe I will get to meet new friends and be able to compete with the new skills I have learned. Also I believe that it will help me do other things better - like focus in class."

What is your understanding of the committment you are making? "That I am taking away from everyone elses time to do something that I want. It means that I have to do even better in gymnastics and school and home. I want to do good so the committment and your time is worthwhile."
Do you understand that you are giving up 3hrs a day, 3 days per week and there is very little room for being sick or tired and that home is priority place of where character development must be seen first? "Yes, I can do it mom."

What are you willing to sacrifice to accomplish this? "I am willing to do your team volunteer hours at the gym, my playtime outside of the gym."

If the answer was 'no' what would you say? "well ok, because of the money, and the time it takes, and the hours, and no babysitter to take me there, and those type of situations." "I'd think it was kindof too bad, because I like doing gymnastics and it is fun to learn new things. Also, the coach invited me to the team... she is really nice and can help me learn new skills."
