Hi Everyone, My name is Sam and welcome to my Go Fund Me Page for my cat Luke. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Unfortunately, when you see these pages its usually at the point where someone doesn’t know what else to do and has exhausted all options before finally resorting to the Go Fund Me page.
I live in Queens with my beautiful cat Luke, who is the most love-able, handsome and charming cat you will ever meet. Everyone who meets him falls in love with him instantly. I’m so proud to be his mom and up until over a week ago, Luke was a healthy and happy 6 year old cat.
On Friday, August 16th, I had to rush Luke to the emergency veterinary hospital as he had exhibited some alarming symptoms (vomiting, lethargy, and lack of appetite). After waiting for a couple of hours for the ER staff to do all of their tests and blood work, it turned out that he was extremely sick and would need emergency surgery. His kidneys were blocked, toxins were building up in his body, and he could not produce any urine. The very next day, he had an emergency surgical procedure called a Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass. During this surgery, devices, called subs, are placed under the skin that lead from the kidney to the bladder to bypass the obstruction causing the blockage. Because both of Luke's kidneys were blocked, he received two of these subs.
I do not have pet insurance and although the cost almost knocked me off my chair, euthanasia was NOT an option. If I could have, I would have given my own kidneys to save him!
Luke spent four nights in the hospital after his surgery and was released last Wednesday, August 21st. Luke's recovery has been going smoothly and he was sent home with stitches in his belly and a feeding tube in his neck to administer his medication. If all is going well, these will be removed at his one week visit. The total cost for the hospital visit, his tests, and surgery came out to a whopping total of $14,000. In addition, there will be ongoing follow-up treatments that he will have to have to flush out his kidneys and to test the subs. These visits will be every 3 months for the first two years, and then every 3-6 months for the rest of his life and can cost anywhere between $400-$1,000 per visit.
I am hoping to raise half of the funds for the emergency vet bill so that I can begin to prepare for the upcoming funds that I will need for Luke’s follow-up visits. I realize that everyone has their own financial burdens to deal with so any amount, big or small, you could contribute will be wholeheartedly appreciated. And, if you are unable to contribute, I will take payment in the form of love and positive thoughts!! Thank you for taking the time to read my story and, in return, I hope this page helps others who may be struggling with these tough decisions and let them know they are not alone.
I will keep you updated on Luke’s progress, so please check back from time to time. With any luck and blessings he will continue to progress and live a long, healthy and happy life.
